University of Missouri Chancellor Bowen Loftin ran into me at an event at the business school and told me he wants to meet with me and anyone interested in properly honoring Lucile Bluford to discuss how the famed journalist and editor of the Kansas City African American newspaper, The Call should be memorialized by the Missouri School of Journalism. Once I know what it is we want to do I can raise the money to do it. This is a huge lesson for me in how much power my words can have. I am not used to having University administrators listen to my suggestions, so I am feeling a strong mix of the emotions of joy and surprise together. Just one week ago the Columbia Missourian ran my op-ed where I mentioned the need for the Journalism School to honor Bluford with a permanent monument telling the story of her fight to integrate the school. I tweeted the link to the Chancellor and he said he liked it. Historically, not just African Americans, but every person with black skin was excluded from the Journalism School. Integration did not come voluntarily in the state of Missouri. While the Journalism School did change its policy to include African-American students, the undergraduate and graduate programs have never enrolled a number equal to or exceeding the ratio of African Americans in the state. She was denied admission to the school in and six consecutive semesters thereafter. Bluford became a local civil rights icon in Kansas City for her efforts to desegregate the Journalism School. Kansas City has a library named after her, and her story is prominently displayed there. That is something Kurpius will need to rectify. Bluford has a library in Kansas City named after her, and when I visited Kansas City over the winter break I took photos of the large monument to her that effectively tells her story to the Kansas City community. Bluford also narrated a film about the historic 18th and Vine neighborhood that can be watched in the museum lobby for free after a visit to either the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum or the Jazz Museum in Kansas City. When Bluford received her Missouri Honors Medal from the Journalism School in and her honorary degree in she said that she did not want the recognition to be about her, but she was accepting the recognition to honor all the African Americans who attended the Journalism School and who will attend the Journalism School after her struggle to integrate the school. I hope that the Journalism School can honor Bluford in a way that considers her sentiment. The average American with credit card debt and student debt could go to Columbia Journalism School in Manhattan for a semester with all the money that they owe. When I imagine the average American debtor, I imagine someone who is stuck in a job they may not like, working long hours, trying to make ends meet, swimming in debt never being able to dream of owning a house and being able to pay it off. This is a huge American problem that will take a generation to solve. I have a solution for someone owing credit card debt: Commit yourself not to spend money on dumb things until you pay off all your credit card debt! To me, that is simple loan sharking. There is no mutual fund or ETF that can consistently get the returns that credit card consumers give the major credit card companies. I spend my money on things like groceries and transportation. It is nice to have a cushion in case I need time to find other work or get trained for a different profession altogether. Lastly, I have a very high credit score living the way I do s so one day when I decide to buy a house it will be easier for me to get a mortgage. If I ever have a mortgage I will work hard to pay that off too. People who spend their money on dumb things have no right to complain that they are having trouble with their finances. America is a country where we spend a lot of money on things that no one needs. We love our habits. Other times we just waste money when our money does not need to be wasted. Coffee is addictive and it has no real nutritional value. It is a drug that gives us a little high in the morning or keeps us going throughout the day. I have lived through a whole semester of Journalism School without drinking a single cup of coffee and so can you. Chances of you winning the lottery are really small. As much as we live in a culture that values consumerism and the love for money you actually loose more than you make when you buy lottery tickets. If you have not seen the brilliant piece of comedy by John Oliver on the lottery it is a must watch. Kick the habit of buying lottery tickets. As much as some of my friends will hate me for saying this, keeping up with the latest fashions is one of the dumbest things people can spend their money on. I grew up next door to a mall, and I have always hated buying clothes there unless there was a store doing a going out of business sale. My Mom never bought soda, it has negative nutritional value and it is expensive. We have all heard of student debt and what a huge problem it is in the United States. The fact is, in the information age, a higher education is becoming more and more important for young up-starts to be successful in the workplace. No matter what profession you may desire you will be more productive, have better upward mobility and be better paid with the more education you have. Even though education is considered an essential necessity it is not free. The best thing to do as a young person though is to avoid going deep into debt when you start your career. It may sound tempting to want to join the company of the connected elite in your higher education because joining them may be your ticket forward BUT if you saddle yourself with debt up front, afterwards, you will be forced to take the job that pays you the most money rather than have a chance to spend time doing what you would really like to do. I faced a choice last March when within a week both Mizzou and Columbia Journalism Schools accepted me to their fine institutions. It had been my dream for many years to attend an Ivy League School because I have never thought of myself as deserving of any less than the best. While Mizzou is not in the Ivy League, it offers the same level of education as Columbia. Five years ago when I first went to Tunisia, the country was a dictatorship. Now, after a revolution, many more protests, an elected Constituent Assembly who successfully drafted a new constitution, political assassinations an American Embassy attack, soldiers ambushed and killed, economic hardship and many other hurdles Tunisians freely voted to elect their parliament for the first time. I have many friends in Tunisia and on Sunday while I was busy reading and writing a reflection paper for one of my Journalism School classes I could not have felt more happy seeing the images of many of my Tunisian friends who voted. Previously the Islamist Ennahda party held a plurality of seats in the Constituent Assembly. Here are my photos, acquired from facebook. I feel very inspired by all my friends in Tunisia who voted, these pictures to me are some of the most beautiful pictures I have seen in a long time. In no way do I think Hend did a bad job in identifying and interviewing sources Kirkpatrick wanted for his story. I just wish Hend pushed Kirkpatrick to dig a bit deeper in his reporting. The consequences of an article like this are enormous. The root causes of a lot of the problems in Tunisia is a severe lack of opportunities for youth who are structurally unemployed. The article fails to put Ettadhamen in the proper context. It is known as the most densely populated area of Tunis with the poorest people who live on the lowest incomes. Ettadhamen is not typical for Tunis, nor is it reflective of the standard of living for most Tunisians with a family member who is employed. Tunisia has a large middle class and most Tunisian families at least have access to a car. Youths race their motorbikes along the already narrowed road, making travel by foot in Ettadhamen risky. Ettadhamen is a neighborhood largely ignored by the municipality. When it rains even the slightest, the entire main street floods with water causing everything to shut down quickly. Ettadhamen is in great need of drainage, but also public improvements in fixing various gaping holes in the streets and sidewalks. At times, heaps of garbage piles in the road. Ettadhamen does not have the cleanest feel. Ettadhamen has a gym and a few places to go running but you have to walk far before you see a blade of grass or an open space to enjoy life. Ettadhamen is a short car ride away from the rich neighborhood of Naser, but Naser may seem like another world to someone living in Ettadhamen. I am very familiar with the large numbers of young men who congregate in them and it is not a surprise that the only organized political movement I saw there this summer was called something like Mutamar Al Khalifa, the movement for a Caliphate. After Rahab got her job as a teaching assistant at the British International School, she moved out of Ettadhamen. Like most poor and neglected neighborhoods of the world, Ettadhamen keeps many of those who are less skilled and can not afford to leave it while those who are skilled and have talents,and the capability to leave usually move out. Ettadhamen is not a reflection of the rest of Tunisia by any means. The New York Times focused on the religious extremism issue in the poorest neighborhood in Tunis and projected that on to the rest of the country, without addressing the bigger failures of the Tunisian government in delivering on a faster pace of development for impoverished regions. In this article the New York Times really did its readers a disservice. While this panel may have appealed heavily to an older audience unfamiliar with social media, I did not get very much out of it. The panelists did discuss how social media can be used to advance a career. However the panelists did not really discuss how a career could be quickly destroyed by social media. Yumi Wilson said that with LinkedIn, someone posting content and writing material must have clear goals to why they are posting. LinkedIn does not pay users to produce content. A viral story may bring exposure but it must also generate more paid subscribers to a service or other monetizing goals, not just shares and views. LinkedIn has 13 million users actively using the service while Facebook has more that 1. Online social presence both for facebook and LinkedIn is important as platforms that share original links bringing users to content elsewhere. There is no actual monetizing possibility for the user on social media platforms if content can not be published elsewhere. According to Jason White the best journalist using facebook is Nicholas Kristof who does an excellent job at promoting his content. Kristof uses his facebook page not just to promote his own articles but he also includes the articles of others. He posts several times a day and includes photos and events that he is attending so that he can expand his audiences. He has more than a million and a half twitter followers and more than , facebook likes. Her presentation was important because it made me realize how important it is for journalists covering business and finance to know what it is they are reporting on. According to a Harvard Business School professor the role and reputation of finance professionals have changed. There was once a time when finance professionals saw their first obligations was to the public that invested and they were like Marines. However now, they are much more like mercenaries. This culture in finance has created all sorts of situations for whistle-blowers to identify fraud or at least challenge the books of particular companies. The Securities and Exchange Commission offers bounties to whistle-blowers for exposing fraud and so whistle-blowers when they find something will not call a journalist first, they are more likely to go to the SEC for a bounty. There is a fine line between making a mistake in complying with Generally Accepted Accounting Principals GAAP and crossing the line into non-compliance or fictitious transactions. It is important to read about management decisions in the notes of their public disclosures and understanding their rationale. Reporting on corporate fraud can lead to great personal problems and criticisms. In fact a lot of accounting is based on common sense. If something looks wrong it probably is wrong. Most of the time a company buries its dead bodies in the notes and management discussions of the financial statements. Owners equity, income and cash flow all relate to each other. Common overstatement of earnings include bill and holds, deferral of expenses, classification of non-operating income, classification of an operating expense as a special or non-operating expense. Although it tells a story that riot police advanced on protesters a reader may not easily understand why the protests are happening. There is no mention in the first five paragraphs that the Chinese government announced a phasing out of democratic elections in Hong Kong. This is a poor lead. Justice Department attorneys argued to district judge Gladys Kessler that allowing the hearings to be open to the public would jeopardize national security through the disclosure of classified information. The Federal Government wants to defend their practices in treating Guantamano Bay detainees but they refuse to be transparent about their practices which appear to fail to conform with basic norms of human rights. This is an issue that is not covered well in the American press but is regularly covered by the Guardian. This is a good lead. Bismuth said that between November and May , he built bunkers and harbors for the Nazis in the nearby port of La Goulette, a suburb of Tunis. He had left school in at age 14 to become a construction worker. After the war, Bismuth worked for the French building barracks for the colonial soldiers stationed in his port city. The idea for this article started after I saw this NY Times infograph during their coverage of the protests of Ferguson. As it turns out, the answer for Columbia was not what I expected. I had to make several sunshine requests to the Missouri Department of Public Safety to get a full comprehensive list of all the items that the federal government had transferred to local law enforcement agencies. Looking at the data, the one item that stood out the most on the spreadsheet of items the Columbia Police Department was dumbbells. I wanted to get to the bottom of why the Columbia Police Department needed all those dumbbells. The Chief of Police avoided talking to me about it for more than a week but I went to a police review board meeting and asked him about the items on the spreadsheet. Chief Jeremiah Hunter. Forck was nice enough to show me his makeshift gym and he let me take pictures of his equipment. In my story I was trying the best I could to paint a picture of the reality of the situation as it is. When Forck talked to me and Kendra, our photographer, he had his officers wait outside his makeshift gym in a parking lot. We had to ask him to bring an officer back in to take the picture of someone lifting the weights. It feels sort of strange to tell the police what to do, but I really wish I could have just been a fly on the wall and seen the officers work out like normal. Forck turned off his workout music so we could talk, I wish he had it on so I did not have to ask him later what his officers listen to when the work out. Forck also invited me to see his hostage rescue drill. Even though my story was not about hostage rescue it was interesting to see how he had his officers training as a team. The room in San Mateo is a real gym with real gym equipment. Here in Columbia, you basically have a unit commander doing the best he can to provide a space that is big enough for only a few of his officers to train in. I called other law enforcement heads in local counties to get ideas of the pros and cons of getting a large armored vehicle from the military. I am very glad the Columbia Missourian editorial team will be giving this story the weight it deserves. It has been on the front page all day, and tomorrow it will be the centerpiece of the print edition of the paper. I have some very good news to announce today on my personal blog. I wrote this lead because after interviewing Roger Bismuth I realized that I had interviewed a holocaust survivor. I went over my notes and realized the most important story I could tell the world after interviewing Bismuth was that the Nazi Holocaust did not just impact Jewish Communities in Europe but that Nazi policy reached North Africa as well.
