As I was doing that, I noted the games that I had purchased each year. So I have both a written and visual record of those purchases. Recently, I organized my games in our game room and updated my BGG account to accurately reflect what I own and what I previously owned. My initial goal was to learn how many of the games I purchased at Essen Spiels I still currently owned. As I was doing that, however, I noticed a whole bunch of other really interesting statistics that I could pluck from the data. Last year I went on a crazed spree at a downtown Essen store before the show and purchased a dozen or so Haba games with nothing but a single paragraph of English on the box to guide me. From , I attended every Essen Spiel six of them and purchased a total of unique games. Those games include both new and used 55 games the used game market is rich with bargains and hard-to-find-in-the-US titles. I still own only of those game purchases. Comparing Previously-owned games makes it even clearer that Essen purchases are more likely to be sold than ones I purchase at other times during the year. All except one of those I still own. I just sell them, unplayed. I tend to be one of the people in our game group who brings the new games to the table first, and the group in general likes trying new things. Am I being more discriminate? So, after digging into these numbers and trying to figure things out, what have I learned? That seems obvious. In the relative calmness of my home office, it all seems very logical. Of course I should show restraint. Or that Mac Gerdts is due for another hit. And that maybe I should give myself a real budget this year, so that I limit myself to the cream of the crop. Oh well…. When I started off selling in Essen in , you could rely on word of mouth and the fear of not getting a copy if you did not buy in Essen. These times are long gone. I am not talking about online retailers here …. What I keep telling people in Essen is: — If you do not like it, do not buy it — If you like it, buy from me because you make me rich and happy, which are both good reasons for me to continue developing hopefully good games. Tony, dont fear! For me and some likeminded friends its about the small publishers. I can get the new Wallace or Kramer easily after the fair, when I had the time to read reviews or even might have a chance at it before I buy. Its much more difficult to get the Hall 4 stuff after the fair, so thats were Im interested in…. All of which translates to: 7 more weeks, baby! Traditional card games may never be the same again!
