Legendary Sportscaster Ernie Johnson Announces Retirement After 40-Year Career

Atlanta, GA – May 28, 2025

After four decades of bringing fans some of the most memorable moments in sports broadcasting, beloved TNT Sports announcer Ernie Johnson has announced his retirement. The 68-year-old Emmy Award-winning host made the emotional announcement during Inside the NBA's season finale, surrounded by colleagues Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith.

'It’s been the ride of a lifetime,' Johnson said, fighting back tears. 'To the fans, my colleagues, and everyone who has supported me—thank you. This isn’t goodbye, just ‘see you down the road.’'

Johnson, known for his smooth delivery, quick wit, and ability to keep the often-chaotic Inside the NBA crew in check, began his career in the early 1980s. He became a staple of Turner Sports, covering everything from the NBA Playoffs to Major League Baseball. His professionalism and warmth made him a fan favorite, earning him the prestigious Sports Emmy for Outstanding Studio Host multiple times.

Fellow analysts paid tribute on social media, with Barkley calling him 'the best in the business' and Shaq posting, 'No one could’ve handled us like EJ. Love you, my brother.'

While Johnson is stepping away from full-time broadcasting, he hinted at occasional guest appearances and continuing his charitable work, including his involvement with children’s hospitals and faith-based initiatives.

TNT has not yet announced a permanent replacement, but Johnson’s final broadcast will be a star-studded special later this summer.
