Veteran Supreme Court Advocate Edwin Kneedler Reflects on Decades of Service

Washington, D.C. – May 3, 2025

Edwin Kneedler, one of the most experienced and respected Supreme Court advocates in U.S. history, continues to shape American jurisprudence after nearly five decades of service in the Solicitor General’s office.

Kneedler, who has argued more than 150 cases before the nation’s highest court, remains a pivotal figure in shaping the federal government’s legal strategy. His deep knowledge of constitutional law and appellate advocacy has earned him admiration from colleagues across the political spectrum.

A Storied Career

Appointed to the Solicitor General’s office in 1975, Kneedler has served under 11 presidents and 17 solicitors general. His first Supreme Court argument came in 1978, and since then, he has become a go-to attorney for complex and high-stakes cases.

'Edwin Kneedler is a legend in the legal profession,' said current Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar. 'His ability to distill intricate legal questions into clear, persuasive arguments is unmatched.'

Landmark Cases

Kneedler has played a role in some of the most consequential Supreme Court cases in modern history, including:

United States v. Microsoft Corp. (2001) – Antitrust litigation involving tech giants.

NFIB v. Sebelius (2012) – Defending the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate.

Department of Commerce v. New York (2019) – Weighing in on the citizenship question for the U.S. census.

Despite his low-profile demeanor, Kneedler’s influence is widely recognized. 'He’s the steady hand that guides the government’s most critical legal positions,' said former Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal.

Looking Ahead

Now in his late 70s, Kneedler shows no signs of slowing down. He recently assisted in preparing the Biden administration’s defense of federal environmental regulations and voting rights laws.

When asked about retirement, Kneedler quipped, 'There’s always another interesting case around the corner.'

For now, the legal community continues to benefit from his unparalleled expertise—a testament to a career dedicated to the rule of law.
