Fort Benning to Undergo Major Transformation, Renamed 'Fort Moore' in Honor of Legendary Military Leaders

Fort Benning, GA — October 26, 2023

In a historic move, the U.S. Army has announced that Fort Benning, one of the nation’s most iconic military installations, will be officially renamed 'Fort Moore' in early 2024. The change honors the legacy of Lieutenant General Hal Moore and his wife, Julia Compton Moore, whose contributions to the military and military families have left an indelible mark on American history.

The decision comes as part of the Department of Defense’s broader initiative to rename military bases and facilities that previously commemorated Confederate figures. Fort Benning, originally named in 1918 for Confederate General Henry L. Benning, has long been a center for infantry and armor training. The new name, Fort Moore, pays tribute to a modern-era hero whose leadership during the Vietnam War and dedication to soldiers and their families exemplify the values of the U.S. Army.

Lieutenant General Hal Moore, who passed away in 2017, is best known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, the first major engagement between U.S. and North Vietnamese forces. His leadership and courage were immortalized in the book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young, which was later adapted into a major motion picture. Julia Moore, his wife, was a trailblazer in her own right, advocating for better support systems for military families and improving casualty notification procedures.

The announcement was met with widespread approval from veterans, active-duty personnel, and military families. 'This is a fitting tribute to two individuals who dedicated their lives to the service of this nation and its soldiers,' said Major General Patrick Donahoe, commanding general of the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning. 'Fort Moore will stand as a symbol of the values we hold dear: courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to one another.'

The transition to Fort Moore will involve updating signage, official documents, and base infrastructure, a process expected to take several months. The Army has also planned a series of events to commemorate the renaming, including a formal dedication ceremony in spring 2024.

The change has sparked conversations about the importance of honoring leaders who reflect the diversity and values of today’s military. 'This is more than just a name change,' said Sergeant First Class Maria Gonzalez, a training instructor at the base. 'It’s about recognizing the legacy of those who truly embody what it means to serve.'

As Fort Benning prepares to become Fort Moore, the base’s storied history as a training ground for generations of soldiers will continue, now under a name that honors a legacy of leadership, sacrifice, and unity.
