"A sense of freedom is something that, happily, comes with age and life experience," said Diane Keaton, who just happily turned 75. Here, to celebrate, are 20 fun facts about one of Hollywood's most original and beloved actresses.
She was born Diane Hall, but everyone called her Annie. In a fun example of art imitating life, the name would resurface as the title role of her signature film.
In 1970 and '71, while working to establish her foothold in Hollywood in her early 20s, Keaton appeared in episodes of four TV shows, all of them classics: "Love, American Style," "Rod Serling's Night Gallery," "The F.B.I." and "Mannix."
The 1970 comedy also featured Beatrice Arthur, Anne Jackson, Cloris Leachman, Anne Meara, Richard Castellano (a Best Supporting Actor nominee) and a young extra named Sylvester Stallone. You might remember the movie better for its Oscar-winning theme song, "For All We Know," which was covered by the Carpenters in 1971.
Keaton met Allen when she auditioned for a role in the Broadway production of "Play It Again, Sam" at the end of 1968. Their relationship began with dinner after a late-night rehearsal, and they soon started living together, though that arrangement was history by the time they started working on the hit movie based on the play.
Much to the dismay of the movie's costume designer, Keaton fetched most of her wardrobe from her own closet. The vintage pieces included baggy men's pants, vests, assorted ties and bowler hats, along with owlish eyeglasses and an oversized watch. Young women everywhere quickly started embracing the Annie Hall style, which evolved into the "boyfriend look."
One of Keaton's early inspirations was Katherine Hepburn. She admired the legendary actress's style and her penchant for playing strong, independent women.
Her onscreen husband was "charming, hilarious, a nonstop talker," Keaton recalled in her 2012 memoir, "Then Again." "And oh, gorgeous! I was mad for him." So mad, in fact, that she insisted on marriage. When Pacino resisted, the relationship got whacked.
Keaton was 31 when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1977's "Annie Hall." It remains her only Oscar, though she has been nominated in the same category three more time—for her performances in 1981's "Reds," 1996's "Marvin's Room" and 2003's "Something's Gotta Give."
Even so, Keaton dwelled on religious beliefs and the afterlife in the 1987 documentary "Heaven," her first film as a writer and director. As a kid, she explained, "I was always interested in religion because I wanted to go to heaven."
"This is insane!" said Keaton as she accepted the 1991 Woman of the Year award from undergraduates dressed in drag at the annual event held by Harvard's Hasty Pudding theatrical society. Previous recipients of the honor included Keaton's idol Katharine Hepburn.
Keaton (seen here with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler, her co-stars in 1996's "The First Wives Club") has no regrets about her single status. "I don't think that because I'm not married, it's made my life any less," she said in a 2001 interview. "That old maid myth is garbage."
Keaton displayed her work in 1980's "Reservations: Photographs by Diane Keaton," a quirky coffee-table book featuring 44 full-page black-and-white photos taken inside hotels. She has also edited six books over the years, including "California Romantica," a 2007 ode to California Mission and Spanish Colonial homes, and 2012's "House," touted as "a luxurious, graphically compelling vision for contemporary living." Well, la-di-da.
In addition to acting, writing and photography, Keaton works as a real estate developer in the Los Angeles area. Her projects have ranged from renovating a Beverly Hills mansion that Madonna bought for $6.5 million in 2003 to a failed attempt to preserve the Ambassador Hotel, where Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968. It was demolished in 2005.
Amanda Peet, her co-star in 2003's "Something's Gotta Give," acknowledged that the scene wasn't easy but had high praise for Keaton's "great body." The younger actresses added, "If I were Diane Keaton, I'd take my clothes off all the time!"
The cougar in Keaton emerged in 2005 when she became romantically involved with Keanu Reeves. She was nearly 60; he was 41. The couple had met on the "Something's Gotta Give" set. Keaton was nominated for Best Actress, but the only prize she took home was "The Matrix" heartthrob.
Keaton adopted daughter Dexter in 1996 and son Duke in 2001. "Motherhood has completely changed me," Keaton later said. "It's just about the most completely humbling experience that I've ever had."
Keaton has long resisted the temptation to have cosmetic "work" done. "My face needs to look the way I feel," she once explained. Besides, she noted, "No matter what you do, you're going to get older."
Sommeliers, brace yourselves: Keaton's favorite drink is red wine on the rocks. "I'm not a wine connoisseur," she says, stating the obvious. "But I like a glass or two at night."
Keaton used to listen to Judy Garland records "all the time," but those days are somewhere over the rainbow. "I started to realize that if you keep singing like that, singing songs of being victimized by love over and over and over again," she explained, "it can't help but have a profound effect on your life."

Diane Hall (born January 5, 1946), better known by her stage name Diane Keaton, is an American film actress, director, producer and screenwriter. She began her career on stage and made her screen debut in 1970. Her first major film role was as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather (1972), but the films that shaped her early career were those with director and co-star Woody Allen, beginning with Play It Again, Sam in 1972. Her next two films with Allen, Sleeper (1973) and Love and Death (1975), established her as a comic actor. Her fourth, Annie Hall (1977), won her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Keaton subsequently expanded her range to avoid becoming typecast as her Annie Hall persona. She became an accomplished dramatic performer, starring in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and received Academy Award nominations for Reds (1981), Marvin's Room (1996) and Something's Gotta Give (2003). Some of her popular later films include Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride (1991), The First Wives Club (1996), and The Family Stone (2005). Keaton's films have earned a cumulative gross of over US$1.1 billion in North America. In addition to acting, she is also a photographer, real estate developer, author, and occasional singer.
