The river port of Rosario lies on the route between cocaine-producing Peru and Bolivia and lucrative markets in Europe. The result is terrifying violence and addiction. On his way home from a birthday party, the year-old stopped to buy juice from a small store in the Los Pumitas district of Rosario, Argentina , unaware that narcos embroiled in a turf war were also on their way. One was shot in the face, a toddler in the shoulder. Rosario, an inland river port city, has been ensnared by gang violence for decades. The difficulties of crossing the ocean seem to have disappeared. As the year-old musician left rehearsals in the leafy city centre in February , two men dragged him by his hair into a waiting car. A note was left inside his pocket, with a warning to a rival cartel. This March four more murders rattled the city, when gangs targeted innocent workers in retaliation for a proposed crackdown on prisoners. The victims included a petrol station worker and father, Bruno Bussanich, 25, who was shot three times at close range. Near his body a note addressed officials. In , even the in-laws of the footballer Lionel Messi, who own a supermarket in the city, were targeted. Now the boys say that working is stupid, that workers are poor all their lives, that the only future is being in a gang. Lots of students have dropped out. Neighbourhoods across the country have become inundated with narcotics, prosecutors say. According to UNODC data, Argentina ranks 14th in prevalence of cocaine use globally, and experts warn much of what is consumed is of low quality. In one toxic batch of cocaine killed at least 20 people and left 74 people in hospital. Much of the local trade focuses on paco , or coca paste, a toxic and highly addictive mixture of raw cocaine base cut with chemicals, which can even contain glue, crushed glass or rat poison. The drug — essentially a waste product of cocaine bound for export — is the third-most consumed illegal substance in the country. Paco is rumoured to have first emerged in Zavaleta, a slum in the capital, in the early s. Now local people say the drug, which can be bought for less than a small bar of chocolate, has spread across the country. Between and , the number of urban-dwelling Argentines aged consuming illicit drugs more than doubled, from 3. The recent increase is fuelled by poverty, he says. The security minister, Patricia Bullrich, has also announced a new anti-drug trafficking unit. But human rights activists and prosecutors warn that such tactics fail to tackle the problem. Scientists find traces of cocaine in sharks caught off the coast of Brazil. How did it get there?

The concentration of the drug was up to times higher than previously observed in other marine life. A study from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation found high levels of the drug in the tissue of these wild marine animals. Researchers tested 13 Brazilian sharpnose sharks caught in the waters around Rio de Janeiro which they bought from fishers between September and August This species, listed as vulnerable by IUCN, was selected for testing as its habitat close to the coast means it is exposed to contaminated discharges. Scientists believe Brazilian sharpnose sharks could be a sentinel species for this type of pollution. All of the sharks tested positive for cocaine, with the drug and its main metabolite benzoylecgonine found in the muscle tissue and livers of the animals. The study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, is the first to find cocaine in wild sharks. Not many packages of the drug are discarded or dumped in this area according to the researchers. But drainage from the illegal labs where cocaine is manufactured and the urine or faeces of drug users are prominent sources of pollution in the water. Wastewater treatment plants around the world are not very good at removing these substances from the water and this means they end up washing down into the ocean. Regardless of where exactly it came from, cocaine only persists for a short while in the environment meaning for researchers to find it in animals like this, a lot of the drug has to be entering the ocean. Researchers have previously found high levels of cocaine pollution in rivers around Rio de Janeiro. Most significantly, they believe it may have an impact on their eyesight which could cause them issues when hunting. Inefficient hunting may shorten the lifespan of the sharks. All female sharks in the study were pregnant but it is unclear how cocaine exposure could impact their foetuses. Aside from the impact on the animals themselves, the sharpnose shark is a common part of the Brazilian diet. Scientists say more research is needed to assess the impact that cocaine residue could have on the people who eat them. By Rosie Frost. Share this article Comments. Share this article.
