Former Senator David Perdue Announces Bid for Georgia Governor in 2026

Atlanta, GA — May 8, 2025

Former U.S. Senator and business executive David Perdue has officially declared his candidacy for Governor of Georgia in the 2026 election, setting the stage for a potential rematch against incumbent Governor Brian Kemp.

Perdue, a Republican who previously served one term in the Senate before losing re-election to Democrat Jon Ossoff in 2021, made the announcement at a rally in Macon, Georgia, where he criticized the state's current leadership.

'Georgia deserves bold, conservative leadership that puts hardworking families first,' Perdue told supporters. 'Over the past few years, we’ve seen our state head in the wrong direction. It’s time to restore fiscal responsibility, strengthen election integrity, and push back against federal overreach.'

Perdue’s entry into the race could reignite tensions within the Georgia GOP. In 2022, he ran for governor with the endorsement of former President Donald Trump but lost the Republican primary to Kemp by a significant margin. This time, Perdue is positioning himself as a unifying figure, emphasizing his business background and past legislative experience.

Governor Kemp, who has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election, remains a popular figure among Georgia Republicans. Political analysts suggest that if Kemp runs again, Perdue could face an uphill battle. However, if Kemp steps aside, the primary could become a crowded and contentious race.

Democrats, meanwhile, are closely watching the developments. Stacey Abrams, who lost to Kemp in 2018 and 2022, has not ruled out another run, setting the stage for a high-stakes election cycle in the battleground state.

Perdue’s campaign is expected to focus on economic issues, law enforcement support, and education reform. With Georgia continuing to play a pivotal role in national politics, the 2026 gubernatorial race is already shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the country.
