David Hyde Pierce Returns to Broadway in a Groundbreaking New Play

New York, NY – April 20, 2025 – Beloved Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor David Hyde Pierce is set to make his triumphant return to Broadway this fall in an original play titled The Last Laugh, a dark comedy about a retired comedian grappling with legacy and reinvention.

Pierce, best known for his iconic role as Niles Crane on Frasier and his acclaimed stage work in Curtains and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, will star as the lead in the production, which marks his first Broadway appearance since 2017.

'I was immediately drawn to the script—it’s witty, poignant, and deeply human,' Pierce said in a statement. 'The character is someone who’s spent his life making others laugh but is now facing the question of what comes next. It’s a theme that resonates with me personally.'

The play, written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Burgess (King James, Dry Powder), will be directed by Tony winner Joe Mantello (Wicked, The Boys in the Band). Previews are scheduled to begin October 12 at the Shubert Theatre, with an official opening night set for November 6.

Fans of Pierce’s work are already buzzing about his return to the stage, with many speculating about potential Tony Award recognition. 'David Hyde Pierce is one of the greatest stage actors of his generation,' said theater critic Ben Brantley. 'His ability to balance humor and heartbreak is unparalleled.'
