Air Force Names First Female Thunderbird Pilot

BREAKING NEWS: U.S. Air Force Names First Female Thunderbird Pilot in Historic Move

Las Vegas, NV – April 20, 2025 – The U.S. Air Force has made history by selecting Major Sarah 'Phoenix' Mitchell as the first female pilot to join the elite Thunderbirds demonstration squadron. The announcement, made today at Nellis Air Force Base, marks a groundbreaking moment in the 70-year history of the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s premier aerial performance team.

Major Mitchell, a seasoned F-35 Lightning II pilot with over 1,500 flight hours, was chosen after a rigorous selection process that evaluated her exceptional flying skills, leadership, and dedication to the Air Force’s core values. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a veteran of multiple combat deployments, Mitchell has broken barriers throughout her career.

The Thunderbirds, officially known as the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, perform daring aerobatic maneuvers at airshows across the country, showcasing the skill and capability of Air Force pilots. Mitchell will begin training immediately and is expected to make her debut in the 2026 show season, flying either the F-16 Fighting Falcon or the newer F-35 as the team considers aircraft upgrades.
