French Tennis Star Pierre-Hugues Herbert Announces Surprise Comeback After Brief Retirement

In a stunning turn of events, French doubles specialist Pierre-Hugues Herbert has announced his return to professional tennis, just over a year after his emotional retirement in 2024. The 34-year-old, best known for his Grand Slam doubles success and dynamic playing style, revealed his decision in an exclusive interview with L’Équipe.

'I thought I was done, but the fire never really left,' Herbert said. 'After spending time coaching and watching from the sidelines, I realized I still have more to give to the sport I love.'

Herbert, a former World No. 2 in doubles and winner of five Grand Slam doubles titles (including a Career Grand Slam with longtime partner Nicolas Mahut), retired last year citing physical wear and a desire to pursue other interests. However, recent training sessions in Nice reignited his competitive spirit.

Tennis fans worldwide reacted with excitement to the news. Mahut, now retired, expressed support, tweeting: 'If anyone can make a successful comeback, it’s Pierre. The court missed his energy!'

Herbert plans to return at next month’s ATP 250 event in Stuttgart, where he will compete in both singles and doubles. While he acknowledges the challenges ahead, he remains optimistic. 'I’m not expecting miracles, but I’m ready to fight for every point.'
