Cook Islands Declares New Marine Sanctuary to Protect Biodiversity

Rarotonga, Cook Islands – April 29, 2025

In a landmark decision aimed at preserving marine ecosystems, the Cook Islands government has announced the creation of a vast new marine sanctuary spanning over 500,000 square kilometers in the South Pacific. The protected area, named Marine Moana Reserve, will safeguard critical habitats for endangered species, including humpback whales, sea turtles, and rare coral reefs.

Prime Minister Mark Brown unveiled the initiative during a ceremony in Rarotonga, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to environmental stewardship. 'This sanctuary ensures that future generations will continue to enjoy the richness of our marine biodiversity.'
