Control Questions
Knowledge BaseThe advantage of this method is that many of the control questions already incorporate TRIZ tools. Even a problem solver unfamiliar with TRIZ will utilize it by answering these questions. For those who are familiar, the control questions serve as a helpful cheat sheet to ensure nothing is overlooked.
Primary Situation Analysis
- What goal do you want to achieve?
- What is hindering you?
- Why do you want to achieve this goal? — List several reasons.
- What typical methods for achieving this goal do you know—including those that don’t suit you? Analyze each method to determine under what conditions it would work for you.
- Using your list of reasons, formulate several goals—achieving any of which would solve your problem. (You can set each of these new goals as a separate task.)
- Who, besides you, wants to achieve this same or a similar goal?
- With whom can you collaborate to achieve the goal?
- Whom can you interest in helping you solve this task? How? With what?
- Who is preventing you from achieving the goal? Why? (Avoid generalities; try to identify the root causes.)
- Is it possible to neutralize this obstacle? How? What is preventing it?
- How can you redirect the harmful activity of the obstacle?
- How can you turn the harmful activity to your advantage?
- How can you persuade (convince, incentivize) the one creating the obstacle to help you?
- What can you do in advance to facilitate achieving your goal at the right time?
- What should you do periodically to help reach your goal?
- What can you remove or relocate to achieve your goal?
- What can you add to the necessary space to stop the obstacle from interfering?
- How can you structure the space so the obstacle no longer hinders you?
- How can you incorporate the obstacle into something larger so it ceases to be an issue?
- How can you divide the obstacle into parts, each manageable separately?
- What needs to be done long before or shortly before the project to aid its implementation and growth?
- How can you make the project’s launch a newsworthy event so many people become aware of it? What can you do in advance to achieve this?
- How can you make time work in favor of the project?
- Where would your project be most effective? Why? What advantages of the actual application location can you utilize?
- Who is directly or indirectly interested in the project’s development? How can they help?
- What additional activities can involve the project’s consumers?
- Who might resist the project’s implementation and development, and why? How can you turn adversaries into allies or at least neutralize them?
- By whom and how is your solution used rarely, irregularly, or once? How can you encourage frequent and consistent use?
- Who will not use your solution at all? Why? How can you attract their interest?
- By whom and how is your solution used regularly and consistently? How can you strengthen their motivation?
- Can you enhance your solution by shifting from individual to collective users or vice versa? What unusual users might the project attract?
- How can you modify the project so users need it as much as daily bread or tea?
- How can you involve users in creating, refining, and developing the project?
- In what other ways can your users contribute to the project’s growth?
- If your competitors wanted to create a similar project, what would they change? What would they add?
- Of what larger service or business could your project become a part?
- Under what circumstances would users of your service or product form an exclusive club?
- What are your users willing to share?
- What would users happily contribute funds toward?
- When would it be reasonable to make your service or product free? How can you profit from the outcomes if your service or product is free?
- Who will implement your project during the startup phase and the growth phase?
- What will you do to avoid staff shortages in the event of rapid development?
- Which staff roles can the project do without? What can operate independently or automatically?
- How can you organize contests, auctions, or exchanges based on the project?
- How can you utilize souvenirs, supplementary products, or branding in the project?
- List the main risks of the project. How will you minimize them?

Resources for Solving/Improving…
Time Resources
- Everything that can be done in advance should be done in advance.
- Complete at least part of the most labor-intensive operation ahead of time.
- Arrange objects in advance so they can come into action without time spent on delivery.
- Divide the process into operations that can be performed in parallel rather than sequentially.
- How can you work continuously? How can you eliminate idle and intermediate steps?
- Use the time between operations.
- Is it possible to organize continuous work?
Space Resources
- Shift from linear arrangement to planar arrangement, and from planar to spatial arrangement.
- Use multi-level (multi-story) configurations instead of single-level ones.
- Utilize the reverse side of the given area.
- Can you attach or suspend objects from the ceiling or walls?
- Is it possible to place one item inside another, like a matryoshka doll?
