If you've never tried using a cock ring before, the idea of slipping something snuggly around your shaft probably seems pretty off-putting. But contrary to popular belief, the folks who use cock rings aren't doing it because they're into pain (not that there's anything wrong with a little BDSM, of course).
Using a cock ring can be beneficial for both you and your partner for lots of reasons. For starters, cock rings help make an erection harder and make you last longer. And even if those two things aren't an issue for you, wearing a cock ring can also result in a more intense, explosive orgasm.
Now that you're paying attention, it's also worth noting that the cock ring of today comes with lots of bells and whistles, which means a better time in bed for both you and whoever you're getting it on with. Depending on what you're comfortable with using and what you're looking to achieve, there are plenty of different models and materials to choose from.
Not sure where to start? Here's a comprehensive look at cock rings, ranging from what they do to how they work, how to use them, and the best ones to try tonight.
What exactly are you getting your penis into when using a cock ring?
"Cock rings are worn around the penis, usually at the base, and are used to restrict blood flow from an erect penis in order to help extend erections," explains clinical sexologist Sunny Rodgers . "They can also be worn around the testicles to further restrict blood flow. When worn to include testicles, one erection ring can be worn around the penis and testicles together, or two erection rings can be worn with one around the penis and the second one around the testicles."
Have you ever wrapped a piece of string around your finger? Wearing a cock ring is a similar experience, except this way more fun.
"Specifically designed to restrict blood from leaving an erect penis, penis rings can make erections last for a longer period of time, and in some cases create a stronger climax," says Rodgers.
If you haven't already guessed, cock rings come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
"There are several types of penis rings ranging from stretchy and adjustable to textured and vibrating," says Jess O’Reilly , host of the Sex With Dr. Jess podcast. "Some rings sit at the base of the penis and others wrap all the way around the penis as well as the back of the testicles."

As far as shapes and models go, there are a few common ones that each work a bit differently.
"O-shaped rings fit around the base of the penis and can be used to help hold a condom in place," says O'Reilly. "Some of them include a vibrating bullet that can be positioned against his testicles or positioned on the upper side of the penis to rub against a partner of any gender during intercourse. Adjustable or snap-on rings can be worn either around the penis or all the way around the base of the shaft and balls. Often made of leather or synthetic materials, these rings can be adjusted with snaps or a sliding bead."
First thing's first: how do you decipher which cock ring is the right fit for your member?
"To find a size that fits, we say takes a bit of eye-balling, maybe a piece of string and a tape measure (use the string to wrap around the base of the penis and scrotum – and then measure the length), and then some trial and error," says Steve Callow, CEO of PerfectFit . "You'll know you've found the right fit when the ring fits snuggly on your erection — but isn't painful or uncomfortable."
You'll want to put your cock ring on when you're flaccid or semi-erect. Adding a bit of lube to this process can make it easier to get the ring situated. "The best way for a beginner is to stretch the ring as much as they can and pull their penis first then one testicle at a time," explains Callow. "Once on it shouldn’t be binding or strangling the base. It should be just loose enough so it can be easily turned while in place because as an erection grows it will tighten. Once hard, a proper fitting penis ring will give you a powerful erection."
If you're new to wearing a cock ring, O'Reilly suggests keeping time limited.
"Though cock rings can offer a slight increase to the size and firmness of an erection, you don’t want to overdo it," she says. "If it’s your first time wearing a ring, try it out for five minutes on an erect penis to make sure it fits and be sure to remove it if you ever observe any pronounced swelling."
Even after you've had experience using the cock ring, Rodgers cautions against using one for a long period of time.
"I do not recommend using an erection ring for longer than 30 minutes," she says. "One important tip to keep in mind is that just as an erection ring can restrict blood from leaving an erect penis, it can also inhibit blood from flowing into a penis. So, it’s best to place it on an almost fully-hard penis to allow it to perform properly."
What type of ring should you start with? You'll need to determine what you want your cock ring to do for you in order to figure it out. For example, is the ring being purchased for your partner's pleasure or your own?
"If it’s mainly for the wearer, you can focus on solo rings without attachments," says intimacy expert Miyoko Rifkin . "If your goal is to stimulate your partner, you’ll look at types of rings with added attachments, and/or vibration. Depending on the preferences of your lover, you’ll choose a clitoral stimulator that is flat or protruding. If your female partner wants deep penetration, you should grab a toy with less intruding attachments so you can keep your bodies close. If you and your partner want to achieve anal stimulation or create dual penetration, you’ll want a toy with an anal probe, or anal beads."
If you're a beginner, consider choosing a ring made out of more malleable materials.
"For absolute newbies, I recommend disposable vibrating rings as they give you the experience you desire without breaking the bank," notes Rifkin. "Once you know you like this type of stimulation and enhancement, you can invest a little more money to try different attachments and features."
Best for: Beginners first starting out
"Screaming O makes a wide range of really affordable rings that are perfect whether it’s your first or 31st time wearing one," says sex and relationship expert Dr. Emily Morse . "There are so many fun shapes and colors, you’ll never get bored."
Best for: Getting your balls involved
If your looking for a ring that covers all your manhood, the snug tugger is an excellent option.
"This cock ring does double duty for penis and testicles, providing a snug fit to enhance stamina and showcase erections," says sexologist Katy Zvolerin .
For triple the stimulation, get your backdoor involved.
"With more men getting into prostate play, this cock ring has the added bonus of an anal stimulator," says Zvolerin. "Three separate (and removable) bullet vibes hit all the hot spots as well – clitoral, anal, and below the shaft for dual pleasures."
Best for: Couples who want to explore
"Penis rings aren’t only for people with penises," says Morse. "Both partners can enjoy the deep, rumbly vibrations of the Pivot because the raised mound can stimulate the clitoris, plus it’s nice and stretchy for a comfy fit. Experiment with their We-Connect app to create your own custom vibrations."
Best for: Getting extra stimulation
"This is the first penis ring that has dual motors for stimulation," Morse explains. "One on top for the shaft that also stimulates the clitoris, and one on the bottom for stimulation to the perineum for indirect prostate stimulation. So with this one, everyone wins."
Not sure what size ring to use? A kit like this one from PlayZone lets you experiment with until you find right one.
"This kit uses premium silicone Xact-Fit rings and comes with 9 sizes to have fun with," says Callow.
Best for: Getting a variety of stimulations
For a versatile vibrating ring, opt for one with different settings like this one from Adam & Eve.
"It's waterproof, with 10 separate vibration settings – plus the bullet vibe is covered in dozens of stimulating ticklers to enhance the experience even more," says Zvolerin.

A beginner’s guide to the popular sex toy.
You've probably seen penis rings, a.k.a. cock rings , on the shelf at a sex shop or even at your local bodega. But you might not know that the cock ring is basically the superfood of sex toys : It pumps up your performance and enhances your pleasure in many different ways. And unlike other sex toys that require extensive preparation (e.g., butt plugs , masturbation sleeves , and anal beads ), you can easily pop on a cock ring within seconds and be ready to go.
A circular band that wraps around the base of your penis, a cock ring can not only make your erection bigger and harder, it can also help you last longer during sex and even help your partner reach orgasm. (Not to mention that it also feels pleasurable to have additional pressure and stimulation on your penis, and when you use a powerful vibrating cock ring, you experience a more full-body orgasm, as opposed to an orgasm that’s localized to your genitals.)
Regardless of the benefits of cock rings, some people with a penis may still be apprehensive about the prospect of sticking their members into a snug little hoop. ( What if it gets stuck?! What if I can’t orgasm with it on? ) So if you're curious about trying one, here's everything you need to know about how to safely use a cock ring, so you can take your sex life to the next level. (We also provided a few of our favorite recommendations, but if you want specifics on each cock ring and why we recommend it, head here .)
No matter what type of toy you use, they all work similarly: the ring traps blood inside the shaft of your penis, which helps you maintain an erection, says Brian Steixner , M.D., chief of urology at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center.
A tight-fitting ring at the base of your penis can also help prevent "venous leakage," a type of erectile dysfunction that results from tissues in your penis failing to properly lock in blood, Steixner adds..
Stressing about staying hard may prevent you from doing just that. "Erections require relaxation," explains sex and relationship therapist Chris Donaghue , Ph.D. Using a penis ring may help relieve some of that performance anxiety, Donaghue says.
A cock ring can also boost your confidence size-wise, says Taylor Sparks, erotic educator & sex goddess of OrganicLoven.com , a company that improves adults' sexual health and wellness through organic and eco-friendly products, sex-positive books, and educational seminars. "Men of all sizes can benefit from the additional blood in the penis, 'making their junk look bigger,'" Sparks points out.
Anecdotally, some men say that cock rings can help delay ejaculation by compressing the area surrounding the base of the penis and testicles, says Brandon Bartling, manager of the Pleasure Chest sex shop in New York City. Which makes sense: It's almost like a modified version of the squeeze technique , a common tactic to delay orgasm. There are also penis rings that have a second ring that wraps around your testicles. That second ring pulls your testicles down, which helps to delay ejaculation.
If your partner is female, she may need a little extra help getting off: only a small percentage of women can reach orgasm from penetrative sex alone . Vibrating cock rings can help stimulate your partner’s clitoris during intercourse, Bartling says. Other cock ring models have built-in "girth extenders" that make your penis feel wider to your partner when you’re inside them if that's something they're down to try.
Most of the time, yes. Just follow these simple guidelines.
You want the ring tight but not so tight that you feel numb.
"I recommend adjustable or stretchy silicone for novices because they are easier to adjust to your size," says Kara Emry, manager of the sex-toy store The Stockroom in Los Angeles.
This one is pretty important. "The penis can be permanently injured if the ring is left on too long," Steixner says. If you feel numbness, pain, or notice the skin changing color, remove it immediately.
It's smart to trim or shave your pubic hair before strapping on your new toy. "Nothing spoils the mood like unwanted pain from hair being pulled when putting on a cock ring," says Hernando Chaves , a sex therapist based in Beverly Hills.
These rings use Velcro, snaps, D-rings, or lasso-style adjusters to help you easily wrap on and remove the toy, says Emry. They’re worn underneath your scrotum and around your penis.
Usually made of a soft silicone, this type of ring is a closed circle that you stretch to wrap around your penis and under your scrotum.
"They’re a popular choice because they are easy to remove, but because they’re not adjustable, they may not be as tight as the wearer would like," Emry explains.
Vibrating cock rings feature a small motor that provides vibrating sensations for you and your partner. "Some men love the vibration, but mostly these are worn to help the woman achieve a more intense clitoral climax," Emry says.
Unlike the other rings on this list, vibrating cock rings are usually worn at the base of the shaft—but not below the testicles.
Stimulating her clitoris with a vibrating ring can take a little practice. You may need to stay deep inside her, working your hips from side to side instead of moving in and out, says Chaves. "Missionary and girl-on-top work best with vibrating cock rings when it comes to clitoral sensation," he says.
Solid rings are not for beginners. They’re worn at the base of the penis and behind the scrotum. Exercise caution before using one of these: "If a man uses one that’s too small for his erectile capacity, it can cause penile damage," Donaghue says.
When it comes to solid cock rings, Sparks recommends the Jnaja, from Vel'vor . "The Jnaja cock ring fits snug against the body, as it is curved, and fits around both the cock and the penis," Sparks says. "It also has a small 'tail' that stimulates the perineum with each stroke, giving him a much more intense orgasm. This cock ring is designed to be worn all day, but must be sized correctly." (Sizing instructions are available on Organic Loven's website .)
Some penis rings actually have two rings, one that wraps around the base of your penis, and one that wraps around your testicles. These rings are great for folks who like testicle stimulation during sex (or enjoying having their balls pulled lightly). These rings also are particularly helpful for delaying ejaculation because it pulls your testicles away from your body (and in order to ejaculate, your testicles need to retract into your body).
There are certain cock rings that connect to a butt plug. It’s a two-for-one deal! You place the cock ring around your base and then insert the butt plug for additional stimulation.

'Cock ring' may sound like the name of the junk jewelry or boner bling you'd put through a Prince Albert (piercing). But a cock ring is actually a category of pleasure products — and a very underappreciated one at that!

Never heard of 'em or unsure how to use them? Not to worry. Below, three sex educators explain exactly why cock rings can be a fun addition to any sexual play involving a penis or dildo.

Let's start with a definition, k? Also known as pleasure rings and c-rings, cock rings are round (or oval) rings that are designed to either snuggly hug the base of a penis (or dildo), explains Taylor Sparks, erotic educator and founder of Organic Loven , the largest BIPOC-owned online intimacy shop. Some cock rings secure around both the penis and the testicles, she says.

There are cock rings available in a number of materials including leather, stainless steel, ABS plastic, glass, and ceramic, says queer sex educator and lesbian Marla Renee Stewart, MA, sexpert for Lovers adult wellness brand recommends. But the bulk of them are made out of stretchy silicone. And stretchy silicone is exactly the material you want if you're new devices (more on why below).

When worn on a biological penis, cock rings are designed to place slight (slight!) pressure on the vein at the base of the penis in order to (slightly!) restrict blood flow, explains sex educator Lisa Finn with sex-toy emporium Babeland . The point? More blood flow = stronger erection + more sensation.
