What Was it Like to Be a Woman in Ancient Rome?
If you heard about the ‘chastity belts’, you’d know that they are often attributed to the Medieval period . These metal belts came with a lock to be fixed around a woman’s hips to ‘protect’ her chastity. Not only did they appear highly misogynistic, but they were also very primitive and unsanitary. But did these belts actually exist, and were they used for their intended purpose? Or were they simply a part of historic lore? Let’s find out.
Albrecht Classen dedicated a book on this subject. In The Medieval Chastity Belt: A Myth-Making Process , he explicitly mentioned that though this device is mentioned in historical accounts, it’s usually by male poets or painted by make artists. There are no direct pieces of evidence that link to chastity belts.
The first time the chastity belt was mentioned can be traced back to the siege technology designed by Konrad Kyeser von Eichstadt . He wrote about these belts in his work Bellifortis , where he also recorded other military devices of the fifteenth century. But von Eichstadt also recorded other devices that were not exactly the military type; for instance, he mentioned air mattresses and saunas — that do not fit the description of war combat devices. Perhaps, he noted these devices, including the chastity belt in humour.
During the late Middle Ages , chastity belts became a common topic of discussion among satirists . The picture of the German print above that dates back to the late sixteenth century shows a young, scantily clad woman who hands the key to her only piece of clothing, her chastity belt, to her husband. The key to her ‘chastity’ belonged to the husband, and that satisfied him . Little did he know that a second key was with the other men who lurked behind the curtains.
Similar caricatures about the chastity belts were popular during the Middle Ages and were primarily shared as a joke during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
However, much later, during the Victorian Era , museums and shows displayed chastity belts as ‘Middle Age torture devices’, and the rich in the society were willing to pay any price to get a hold on such barbaric tools, including the chastity belts. However, these fake chastity belts were no longer to ‘protect’ virtue or shared as a joke; instead, these were possibly used as torture devices .
The chastity belts were more of a joke for the females and fantasy for the males. One thing is for sure: these were never used as devices to ‘protect’ a woman. If anything, they were viewed more as a sexual fetish among the misogynistic strata of the population.
