Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Eastern Seaboard as High Tides and Strong Winds Threaten Low-Lying Areas

May 5, 2025 — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for several counties along the Eastern Seaboard, warning residents of potential flooding during high tides over the next 48 hours. The advisory, in effect from late Tuesday through Thursday morning, comes as a combination of strong onshore winds and higher-than-normal tides raises concerns for low-lying coastal communities.

Areas Affected

The advisory spans from southern New Jersey down through the Delmarva Peninsula and into parts of North Carolina, including vulnerable regions such as the Outer Banks and Chesapeake Bay. Minor flooding is expected in typical flood-prone areas, including beachfront properties, docks, and coastal roadways.

Cause of the Flooding

Meteorologists attribute the elevated flood risk to a persistent northeast wind, which is pushing water toward the shore, exacerbating tidal surges. Additionally, the new moon phase is contributing to higher astronomical tides, increasing the likelihood of water encroachment.

'We’re expecting tides to run 1 to 2 feet above normal,' said NWS meteorologist Lisa Carter. 'This won’t be a major flooding event, but it could lead to water covering roads, parking lots, and some shoreline properties.'

Precautions for Residents

Local officials are urging residents in flood-prone zones to:

Move vehicles to higher ground if parked in low-lying areas.

Avoid driving through floodwaters, as even shallow water can stall vehicles.

Secure outdoor items that could be swept away by rising waters.

Long-Term Concerns

This advisory follows a pattern of increasing nuisance flooding along the East Coast, a phenomenon linked to sea level rise and more frequent coastal storms. Experts warn that such events may become more common in the coming decades.

The NWS will continue monitoring conditions and may upgrade the advisory to a Coastal Flood Warning if water levels rise more than expected. Residents are encouraged to stay updated via local news and the NWS website.
