Merrie Monarch Festival 2025: A Hula Dream Come True

For years, Leilani had dreamed of dancing at the Merrie Monarch Festival, the most prestigious hula competition in the world. Born and raised in Hilo, she grew up watching the dazzling performances at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium, mesmerized by the grace, power, and storytelling of the dancers.

This year, after years of training under her kumu hula (hula teacher), Leilani’s hālau (hula school) was finally invited to compete. The theme was 'E Hoʻi Ke Aloha I Ka ʻĀina' (Love Returns to the Land), honoring the deep connection between the Hawaiian people and their ʻāina (land).

The Journey to the Stage

Months of intense practice led up to the festival. Leilani and her hālau rehearsed under the hot sun, perfecting every motion—from the gentle sway of their hips to the sharp precision of their kaholo steps. Their oli (chant) told the story of Pele’s journey across the islands, and their kahiko (ancient hula) was a powerful tribute to the volcanic lands of Hawaiʻi.

The Night of Kahiko

As Leilani stepped onto the stage, her heart pounded. The stadium was packed, the crowd silent in anticipation. The deep sound of the pahu (drum) began, and she felt the spirit of her ancestors guiding her. Every movement was strong, deliberate—her hands telling the story of lava flowing, her feet grounding her to the earth.

When the performance ended, the crowd erupted in applause. Tears filled Leilani’s eyes as she realized—they had done it. They had honored their culture with everything they had.

Victory and Legacy

The next night, the awards were announced. Leilani’s hālau won first place in Wahine Kahiko (Women’s Ancient Hula) and Overall Miss Aloha Hula went to their lead dancer. But more than the trophies, what mattered most was the pride they felt in perpetuating their traditions.

As Leilani left the stage, her kumu whispered, 'Now you are part of the story of Merrie Monarch.' And she knew—this was only the beginning.
