Naval Service fired shots twice as ship carrying drugs tried to flee. A smaller trawler, named the Castlemore, left Castletownbere in west Cork on Friday night, where it was purchased earlier that day. The Castlemore trawler, suspected to be used to receive deliveries of drugs from the much larger MV Matthew, ran aground on a sandbank off the coast of Blackwater, Co Wexford, on Sunday night. Two men, who are now in custody, were winched to safety from the ship by the Irish Coast Guard in the early hours of Monday morning. MV Matthew had experienced engine trouble off the coast of Wicklow over the weekend but was able to restore power. However, the captain of the ship, who is now in custody, suffered a blackout and sustained injuries and had to be evacuated off the vessel by an Irish Coast Guard helicopter at around 9pm on Monday. On Tuesday the large ship was heading to the Port of Cork to source turbochargers to repair its engines when it realised it was being pursued by authorities, who had been tracking the vessel. The ship was brought to Cork Harbour where searches identified a massive quantity of cocaine had been stored on board. The size of the metre-long bulk carrier means it could take several days to thoroughly search the vessel, which sources believe was involved in the multiple drop-offs of large quantities of drugs in Europe. One of those smaller vessels was the Castlemore fishing vessel, which ran aground on a sandbank about 12km off the coast of Blackwater, Co Wexford, late on Sunday night.
