Former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr Found Not Guilty in Patrick Lyoya Shooting Case

In a verdict that has reignited debates over police use of force, former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr was acquitted of all charges in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya. The decision, handed down by a Kent County jury after two days of deliberation, concluded a highly publicized trial that drew national attention.

Schurr, who was charged with second-degree murder, testified that he feared for his life during the April 2022 traffic stop that escalated into a physical struggle. Body camera footage showed Lyoya, a Congolese refugee, attempting to flee after being pulled over for an unregistered license plate. The altercation ended when Schurr shot Lyoya in the back of the head while the two were on the ground.

Prosecutors argued that the use of deadly force was unjustified, while Schurr’s defense maintained that the officer acted in self-defense after Lyoya grabbed his Taser. The jury ultimately sided with the defense, finding that Schurr’s actions did not constitute murder under Michigan law.

Community reactions were mixed following the verdict. Lyoya’s family, supported by civil rights activists, expressed outrage, calling the decision a failure of justice.
