Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa Makes Historic Visit to Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis

Jerusalem, October 18, 2023 – In a rare and poignant gesture of solidarity, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, visited the Gaza Strip today to offer spiritual support and humanitarian aid to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.

Pizzaballa, the highest-ranking Catholic official in the Holy Land, entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing, becoming one of the few international religious leaders to do so since the escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas earlier this month. His visit comes as Gaza faces severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies due to the blockade and airstrikes.

'I came to stand with the suffering people of Gaza, to pray with them, and to assure them they are not forgotten,' Pizzaballa said in a statement. 'War brings only destruction and pain. We must seek peace, not through weapons, but through dialogue and compassion.'

The cardinal met with local Christian communities, many of whom have sought refuge in churches and schools, as well as with Muslim leaders and aid workers. He also visited the heavily damaged Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius, where displaced families are sheltering.

Pizzaballa, an Italian Franciscan friar who was elevated to cardinal by Pope Francis last month, has been a vocal advocate for peace in the region. His visit underscores the Vatican’s growing concern over the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has pledged additional aid, including medical supplies and financial support for affected families. However, Pizzaballa emphasized that long-term solutions require political will. 'Humanitarian aid is urgent, but it is not enough,' he said. 'The international community must act to end this cycle of violence.'

As the death toll in Gaza surpasses 3,000, Pizzaballa’s presence serves as a powerful call for ceasefire and reconciliation. His mission highlights the Church’s role in bridging divides amid one of the Middle East’s most devastating conflicts in recent years.
