Can coding agents read your docs? We checked 180 developer docs sites

When a developer asks Claude Code, Codex or Cursor how to use your library, the agent often fetches your docs live. What it gets back decides whether it answers from your current docs or guesses from old training data. On 2026-09-28 we ran one automated check against the public docs of 180 developer projects: popular Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Rust and Go libraries, databases, API products and dev tools.

What we checked

  • /llms.txt: a markdown index of the docs (llmstxt.org proposal), at the docs path or any parent path up to the domain root
  • /llms-full.txt: the whole docs as one markdown file
  • Markdown versions of pages (page.md or page/index.md), which agents can read without HTML noise
  • Whether the page has real text without running JavaScript
  • Whether the CDN or firewall answers agent user-agents (ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User, AI search bots) differently from a browser, and what robots.txt says about them

Results

  • 116 of 180 (64%) serve an llms.txt.
  • 87 of 180 (48%) serve an llms-full.txt.
  • 113 of 180 (63%) serve markdown versions of pages.
  • 49 of 180 (27%) offer none of the three, so an agent has to parse HTML.
  • 6 serve little or no text without JavaScript, and 24 more are thin without it.
  • 1 answered agent user-agents differently from a browser (blocked or challenged). 1 disallows ChatGPT-User, Claude-User or AI search bots in robots.txt.

Blocking agents turned out to be rare for docs. The real gap is format: 27% of these projects give an agent nothing but HTML pages to scrape.

By docs platform

  • Custom / unknown: 21 of 39 serve llms.txt
  • Next.js (custom): 25 of 32 serve llms.txt
  • Mintlify: 29 of 30 serve llms.txt
  • Docusaurus: 10 of 16 serve llms.txt
  • Read the Docs (Sphinx): 2 of 16 serve llms.txt
  • Starlight (Astro): 10 of 14 serve llms.txt
  • MkDocs Material: 2 of 10 serve llms.txt
  • VitePress: 7 of 8 serve llms.txt
  • Nextra: 1 of 3 serve llms.txt
  • Fern: 2 of 2 serve llms.txt
  • GitBook: 1 of 2 serve llms.txt
  • MkDocs: 1 of 2 serve llms.txt
  • Hugo: 2 of 2 serve llms.txt

The platform mostly decides the result. Mintlify: 29 of 30; VitePress: 7 of 8; Read the Docs (Sphinx): 2 of 16; MkDocs Material: 2 of 10. Hosted platforms and generators that ship llms.txt by default score well; on the others somebody has to add it by hand or with a plugin.

By kind of project

  • API / SaaS products: 35 of 37 (95%)
  • Developer tools: 20 of 34 (59%)
  • Python libraries: 12 of 31 (39%)
  • Databases: 14 of 15 (93%)
  • Rust: 2 of 12 (17%)
  • Go: 3 of 10 (30%)

If you maintain docs: cheap fixes

  • Publish /llms.txt: a title, a one-line summary, and links to your key pages with one-line descriptions.
  • Publish /llms-full.txt, so users can paste your whole docs into an agent's context in one go.
  • If your docs are a JavaScript app, make sure the HTML has the content (pre-render or SSR), or serve markdown copies.
  • Don't block ChatGPT-User or Claude-User if you want agents to read your docs when a user asks. Blocking training crawlers is a separate choice.

Caveats

  • This is a convenience sample that leans toward well-known projects. It isn't random, and less-known projects probably score lower.
  • One automated pass on 2026-09-28, one page per site plus the files above. Sites change, and a file hosted on a different domain would be missed.
  • llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard. Ahrefs found most llms.txt files get few requests from AI crawlers (study). The practical use is developers pointing agents at it.
  • Some projects publish agent-friendly docs another way (MCP servers, Accept: text/markdown content negotiation). We only partly check for those.

Check your own docs

The checker we used is free and takes about ten seconds: run the free check (product page: llms.txt Build; this survey with a sortable table: mirror). It lists each problem with a fix and previews an llms.txt for your docs. Disclosure: we also sell a $19 done-for-you build of llms.txt and llms-full.txt from your docs (details). You don't need it to use the checker or this data.
