A friend of mine sews a patch of cloth (usually a flag) whenever she travels to a new country. I like the idea, but I was thinking of having a native tattoo artist do the art instead, for a cleaner look.
But... I have no idea how tattooing works. I figure tattooing leather can't be that different from tattooing an elderly person, but I'd like to know if anyone has some experience or knowledge about this. And if this is possible... is there anything different with the process? I've Google'd to find some "tattoed leather" goods, but I have no idea if I can take a finished leather product into a tattoo parlor and get work done on it.
Leather is actually quite a bit different from living skin, despite what the soap commercials say. It may work, I'm not sure, but I think you would have a far better product if the skin was tattooed before it was tanned. Another option to consider would be using burning tools on the finished product.
i would look for a place that does branding (heating up a piece of metal and using it to design the skin). it would probably definitely work.
A guy I know does tattoos, and he used to practice on fruit. I asked why he didn't work with leather, and he told me tattooing on leather would ruin the needle unless the leather was really soft.
well sort of. the best ansewer you can get is if you go to a tattoo shop and ask them if they will be able to tattoo on your bag.
you have to remember that tattoo artists practice tattooing on pig leather. but its just for practice.
just go to your friendly local tattoo artist they would love to clarify the answer for you.
They practice on pig skins , not tanned leather. They are the same thing like a steak is a cow.
Yeah, if you're going to be traveling and want this to last then you should do a practice run before you head out. Get it done(if you can) and then put it through some of the stuff it will go through during your travels.
You can use an electric scarification machine to imprint leather. You can also get a metal pattern, a soft mallet, wet the leather, put the pattern on the positive side and gently pummel it with the mallet.
Thanks for the very informative answer!
I think I'll go with embossing - maybe get each country's national animal on the bag, without coloring. Any idea how much it'd cost for a skilled job? (Wouldn't want to risk ruining the bag after several countries.)
It would be a costly proposition and I believe the results won't be great. When I first learned to tattoo, I used leather scraps to hone my technique, but the results never looked spectacular. Living skin responds well to tattoos because the thousands of tiny holes that are poked into the skin while the ink is pushed into the subdermal layers heal over. Another factor is that living skin has more translucency, so the ink shows through better.
Ultimately, it would /work/ but the results wouldn't be spectacular by any stretch.
Yes, there is a few guys who sell tattooed leather motorcycle seats.
I knew a guy that practiced tattooing on joints of pork, then he'd cook them and serve them. I really wish I took pictures now, some of them were awesome.
