Before heading home for New Year I gifted myself a birthday gift, a trip to Nepal on budget. I made an entire trip in just 10K including air travel, stay, food, sightseeing etc for 3 days. To begin with, I did some research before I planned for this trip as I had the option of trip to Dalhousie. Since I wanted my birthday to be different this time without much fanfare and spending a peaceful time in the lap of nature, Nepal happened to be the best destination I could choose. So how did I made this trip under INR 10,? I had booked the same train for Patna to Jogbani, however, had to cancel due to the uncertainity in the timing of trains as most of the trains were running hours late due to fog. Mithapur bus stand has a reputation of one of the worst bus stand and I got to know why after I was there in person. If not for Paplu, I think I would still be roaming around the bus stand looking for my bus. Once you get down at Jogbani you have to walk and cross the border which is divided by a gate. Make sure you have all the valid IDs with you before you enter the country. As you enter the border, you can find e-rickshas plying on the road, also there are various counters near the parking for exchanging the currency. After taking an e-riksha to Biratnagar bus stand, I had my first breakfast at Nepal. The journey from Dharan to Hile was done in 3 hours by bus. You know you have reached Hile once you see the famous landmark in the center of the town, a replica of Tongba local beer. Having seen all there was to see at Hile , I made my way back towards Bhetedar by a public commercial sumo which could be found every hour. Once at Bhetedar, the hunt for hotels started with many hotels offering modest to star hotel stays. One need not book a hotel in advance here since you can find hotels at every feet. The best are the family owned homestays. The price could range from NPR to beyond depending on the facilities provided and the location. One can also choose the rooms as per their choice. I went to almost 10 hotels and checked the rooms before finalising a hotel room for NPR. Since it was late, as per the location, I had my dinner at the same hotel, a pork thali, which was edible but not upto my taste and looked more like a fusion of Indianised food. Hence I would suggest that if you are going to have food, try for the family owned restaurants there. They serve authentic food at cheaper rates and you can customise your foods as per your taste. Day 2 at Nepal being my birthday and my contact number not reachable fortunately the internet connectivity was good so got sometime with friends and family through video call before heading for trekking I was celebrating a peaceful but adventurous birthday. Though I failed to see the snow capped mountains at Hile due to bad weather on day 1, the morning was all together a new story with the sunrise I could see the far away snow capped mountains. After going for a short trek from the hotel towards the view tower, I could see the entire village waking up. Due to the bad experience with dinner at the hotel, I headed towards a restaurant which was built at the side of the hill and had majestic view and the breakfast was equally delicious. Coming from a country where drinks are mostly sold by license holders or government approved shops, Nepal could be the heaven for people who are into drinks. More than the snacks, one is sure to find drinks in every shop. After buying some churpi and snacks and checking out from hotel, I took a local bus for Namaste Jharna, a beautiful waterfall which was fed by the pure mountain streams. The trek was an easy trek because of the stairs and bridges built for the publilc to climb up and experience the beauty and to maintain all these, there is a nominal entry fee which one need to pay, 30 NPR for Nepal citizens and NPR for foreigners however, thanks to my mongoloid looks and my basic knowledge of Nepali language, I was thought to be one of the localites and was asked to pay only 30 NPR. The beauty that awaits for you once you reach the waterfall is enough to take away all the weariness one feels to reach the fall. Irrespective of the icy cold water, one cannot resist going in there and enjoy the crystal clear water. The shacks might look unappealing from outside but it has got a different world inside, serving the best foods to help you recover your strength from the tiresome climb. The simplicity of the Nepali people is very well known to all the people in the world and I had the practical experience of their hospitality during my entire journey and stay. They have utmost respect for each and every individual which is evident with the way they talk to strangers and the way they give you something. Tip: While handing or taking money at Nepal, accept it with both hands. After taking my sweet time spending there, it was time for me to move to Dharan. There are buses every mins passing through the way and you need to stop it by waving your hands as there are no specific parking area. With the memories from Hile, Bhetedar and Namaste Jharna I made my way through the serpentine road which was carved out on the hillside. As I had sometime before my train at Jogbani, I did some shopping and and local sightseeing at Dharan. After crossing the border on foot, just like the way I entered, I went directly to the railway station which was less than a KM from the border gate. I had the experience of most isolated and deserted airport in my life. The only company I had that morning at airport was a stray dog I was told the gate will open at 8 AM. With lots of beautiful memories and experience, I boarded the flight right on time to be at Delhi for Christmas eve. Anybody looking out for budget, foreign trip to offbeat locations, with diverse culture, good food and friendly people I would definately suggest Nepal. Skip to content.
