I think mine has been a complete opposite actually. The Deluxe has more gain and focused articulation than a DR. It isn't as clean and headroom boomy sounding as a DR. We did a side by side comparison without reverb on the Deluxe. You could clearly hear the difference. Again, all units compared have been early '64 or late ' I can't comment much about later models. Only two things but they make a huge difference. The coupling cap that normally reads. That makes the amp much bigger sounding and more open. With the original, the amp is thinner or with more top end buzz and perceived gain. And the other thing is to remove the bright cap on the treble channel again, making the amp much bigger sounding in the 6 to 8 range on the volume pot and much more useable at lower volumes too. I tried changing the slope resistor and neg feedback resitors to plexi values but in this particular amp I like it better with the stock ones that are in there These soundfiles dont truly represent the tone, the fuzz on top is more from the recorder than what was coming out of the cab Joined Apr 5, Messages 6, I think this metal panel sounds great split. Im not gonna even bother to try it shared. I also dont want to lessen the gain any on this one Joined Jan 17, Messages Ed A, Excellent tone and playing! I only just joined I've been on an Allmans tone hunt for years too. I use almost exactly the same gear as you, except your LP is miles better than mine '82 Std with HighOrder pickups. I also use a '71 watter with lowered filtering, except mine's a bass head. I also have two basketweave cabs with G12M25s and G12H30s, all original bass cones. But for the Allmans sound I have a homebuilt basketweave-style 2x12 with DFs minty, grey frame, Fender labels, original cones. I would be extremely interested in hearing your setup and playing with a Cerwin Vega. Something about the somewhat 'hoarse' upper midrange. I managed to score two original ERs almost half a year ago, but they arrived very poorly packaged with the cones shred to pieces. I am going to have them re-coned, but might be a while. I'd also be very interested in seeing the 2x12 cab you're using those with. Are they wired in series or parallell? Last edited: Nov 24, Joined Mar 21, Messages Ed, Once again you are the man! But for the Allmans sound I have a homebuilt basketweave-style 2x12 with DFs minty, orange frame, Fender labels, original cones.
