All taxis are independents and may quote a low price to Negril, then try to extract a much larger fee once you have been delivered to your hotel. It is a very common practice. It can also take longer via private taxi as they like to take you on a tour of the surrounding area and stop at friend's shops along the way - hoping to again up the payment. By Jamaican standards that is cheap, because for the most part, budget accommodation is very expensive even for crappy quality places. Hope you enjoy being harrassed by drug dealers, because you can not get away from it in Negril anywhere and I mean anywhere. It isn't easy to avoid it in most other places in Jamaica either, but it is at its worst in Negril. I reckon if you went scuba diving you'd have hustlers trying to either sell you drugs or sell you prostitutes. I even went about metres out in to the ocean a long way past the red markers saying where it is safe for swimming , and I had a guy come past on a jet ski asking if I wanted to buy cocaine. If you can look past the hustlers selling drugs and prostitutes that are 99 out of every males living in Jamaica, well Negril is really nice especially the beach on a clear night where the sunset has the sun melting in to the water.
