Chefchaouen is definitely one of my favorite places in Morocco. I love Chefchaouen not only for its mesmerizing architecture but because the locals are so nice and kind there, their traditional dresses are incredibly beautiful that I could try myself and they have the most delicious avocado juice in the world. Chefchaouen is so wonderful that visiting it only once in a lifetime is not enough. I have been there already twice. On the second occasion, I planned on staying there only for 2 days. In the end, I doubled my time there. Chefchaouen , which is nestled in the Rif Mountains in northwest Morocco , was founded in by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami to protect the north of Morocco from and fight the Portuguese invasions. During the medieval ages, after the Spanish Reconquista, several ethnic groups escaped to and settled down in Chefchaouen. One story says that the city was blue already since the city was founded. According to another story, the city was painted blue by the Jews. Blue represented their faith in skies and heavens, peace and safety. As of today, the walls of the houses in Chaouen are kept blue and very well taken care of to attract tourists. Absolutely, yes! Chefchaouen is one of the dreamiest travel destinations in the world and one of the most touristy places in Morocco. Even if you spend only a week in Morocco , you should not miss Chefchaouen. I traveled to Chaouen solo and I had an absolutely fantastic time. Based on my personal experience, I recommend Chefchaoen for solo female travelers as well. The buildings of the medina are washed in vibrant shades and cues of blue. The medina looks exactly like in the pictures. Every corner of the medina is jaw-dropping. There are properly set photography spots in the medina where you pay 1 — 5 dirhams for taking photos. You will see cardboards indicating that. There are a few places in Chefchauen where you can rent and take photos in traditional Berber dresses. The price is between 5 — 20 dirhams. As you leave the medina towards the Spanish Mosque, there are local women with a bag of scarves and hats that you can pick from. If I remember well, they only asked for 5 dirhams. I was on my own, I enjoyed it so much that I did it at three different times. And because they took so many photos of me, I paid double. But to be honest, the ladies up have more than enough scarves and accessories to dress you up and they are just super friendly. So, I decided to add a lot of them to this blog post. Outa el Hammam is the central square of Chefchaoen. There, you will find the Kasbah citadel of Chefchaoen and the Grand Mosque. In my opinion, Chaouen is perfect for shopping. I find the prices there pretty low. I bought hats, paintings, baskets, jewelry, bed and pillow covers. I only haggled twice. I negotiated the price of the painting and then the bed and pillow covers. As for the covers, they were really cheap but because I bought a lot of them, I bargained a bit. The sellers in Chefchaouen are really nice and that is probably why I purchased a lot of things there. I felt really comfortable with them. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the mosque. On the way up, just along the trail, there are a lot of beautiful agave cacti and prickly pear. Hash in Morocco means Hashish which is made of cannabis plant. This is not something I ever tried or I ever will. I had literally zero idea about it until I was followed by a weird guy in the medina of Chefchaouan when I was there for the first time back in I escaped to a shop from that weirdo, where the shop owner told me that he probably wanted to sell me hash. The most famous places to get this stuff are the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen where one can find the best quality of hashish. Just in the Rif Mountains, you can find around , family farms cultivating cannabis. I know that many foreign tourists like to visit hashish farms and get stoned there. I think the best food you can get in snack shops called mehlaba and on the street. My favorite place to eat was the mehlaba close to Casa Mrabet. I went there every single day or even twice. The most delicious drink you can have there is Zaazaa, a local avocado smoothie. Generally, these are the ingredients for a good zaazaa but there might be different versions. You can find it in a couple of other cities in Morocco but the very best one is in Chefchaouen and this mehlaba just makes it perfect. There, I tried all the sweets and sandwiches. Even a simple sandwich with eggs and goat cheese was incredibly tasty especially because they use very delicious types of bread. They also have different types of sweets such as Natillas de Leche Spanish custard or Arabic puddings. They are all excellent. Last but not least, their milk coffee is also perfect. I tried a couple of restaurants on the main square. I was not satisfied with their meals at all. Obviously, you should still try them because the restaurants there are really pretty, have a wonderful atmosphere, and the view from there is awesome. As for street food, I literally tried everything I saw on my way and I was very happy with all of them. My favorites were the snail soup with cooked chickpeas and the fried corn. A small snail soup is 3 dirhams 0. In the medina, you can also find a lot of places selling fresh fruit juices. They were simply perfect. All I can say, they are super cheap. Day Trip from Tangier to Chefchaouen. Day Tour from Fes to Chefchaouen. Riad Cherifa. Hotel Abi Khancha. In my opinion, the best seasons for Chaouen are spring and autumn. Some people say that the summer is too hot there. Last time, I was there at the beginning of June and I loved the weather. Furthermore, there were not many tourists. A lot of people take day trips to Chaouen, for example from Fes or Tanger. But if you have more than a week, you should spend at least 2 days there. And if I traveled to Chaouen again, I would surely spend there 4 days. For me, personally, the easiest and most convenient is a shared taxi. The shared taxi to Chefchaouen costs 70 dirhams. The ride took somewhat more than 2 hours. Once, I took a bus from Tangier to Chefchaouen. All I remember that it was a bumpy ride. The bus costs between 50 and 75 dirhams. The journey time is between and depending on the connection. You can check the timetable on the website of CTM. I personally took a bus from Chefchaouen to Fes. The price of the bus is 75 or 80 dirhams. The ride is between 2 hours and You can check the timetable here: CTM bus schedule. They are too far away from each other. If you are on holiday, you should definitely take a trip first to Tanger or Fes and then visit Chefchaouen because you will have to first go to Tanger or Fes to get a connection to Chefchaouen. But I got to learn about cannabis and hash culture in Morocco a bit. Where to eat in Chefchaouen I tried several restaurants, snack shops, and street food in Chefchaouen. When I had street food, I never stopped with one portion. I took double portions all the time. Tours to Chefchaouen If you only want to take a day trip to Chaouen, you definitely need to join a tour. Best accommodation in Chefchaouen. Best time to travel to Chefchaouen In my opinion, the best seasons for Chaouen are spring and autumn. Your guide on what to do in Chefchaouen. T he purpose of this trip to Morocco was mainly to see the bluest city ever! I had previously been to Morocco, in Marrakesh, which totally blew me away due to its incredible buildings and un-modernised feel. As I am a fan of old architecture and mosaics, Marrakesh ticked all the boxes. We managed to do some day trips to other places near Marrakesh, but the one place I was really desperate to go to was Chefchaouen. However, if you have been to Morocco then you will know just how long it takes to get everywhere due to the incredible but huge Atlas Mountains. While still in Marrakesh I decided I would have to come back to Morocco as soon as possible. I was met by an unexpectedly modern city, high-rise buildings and none of the Moroccan ch arm I so desperately missed. Luckily, where we were staying was in the medina, the old part of most Moroccan cities. Once we had weaved our way in and out of people selling rugs and trinkets, we had finally made it to our hostel, which we spent the night in ready to get up early and head to the blue city. We spent a few days here as after this we were getting a boat over to Algeciras to head to Seville. However, I would recommend spending at least 2 weeks in Morocco to see as much as you can! If you are in Marrakech, I would also recommend flying as transport across Morocco takes a very long time. We were very worried before we arrived as we were told to book our bus tickets from Tangier to Chefchaouen online, however this had been impossible! Having been to Morocco, I knew this was not a problem as M oroccans are clever people and know how to make money off of tourists desperate to see their country! Arriving in Chefchaouen, even my highest expectations were reached, my jaw dropped and I knew I was in one of the most amazing places I had ever been to. The intricacy of the buildings was just stunning, each door different, beautifully painted with fabulous patterns. The blue buildings stretched as far as the eye could see. The people were all incredibly welcoming and I was really blown away at how stunning this place really is. So many little streets to discover, as the medina is the main blue part of the city. It is quite easy to get lost, but every minute was great discovering more parts of this beautiful little town. Finally, why is it all blue?? Read more: What to see in Marrakech. I woul d recommend staying in the medina, as then you are right in the middle of the prettiest part of Chefchaouen. Although, like us you may be woken up at 5am if you are near a mosque! A gorgeous little hotel with only three rooms and a beautiful rooftop terrace overlooking the city. Great for a sunrise view! Also it was very chilly at night, but plenty of blankets were provided and even a heater in the room! In the northern part, in my opinion most beautiful part of the medina, with some stunning views as it is set a bit higher up. Check for prices and availability in Chefchaouen. Fabulous front door! If you do not have breakfast included, the traditional Moroccan breakfast consists of khobz and mesemen which are basically two types of pancake! Then usually this comes with butter and jam. However, if you need eggs as much as I do in the morning then I have the place for you!! A choice of different types of breakfast. We went for a Chefchaouen breakfast which consisted of a cheese that tasted like feta mixed with goats cheese, two fried eggs with a garlic olive oil on top and some fabulous fresh bread. Also there was an almost. Anywhere on the main square, and I would recommend a vegetable tagine or chicken and lemon! Usually around Dirham, so very cheap. This is on the main square has the prettiest seating and great food too. If you have had enough of tagine, this place had some del icious pizza and pasta! It is very popular, so you may have to wait a while for a table. My advice to you, just get up and go and keep walking! There are a few popular instagrammable spots. For 5 Dirham you can go inside to the most gorgeous courtyard and take a few photos. This is a small walk up past the main walls of the medina. It is a mosqu e on top of a hill and has the best views over the whole town! It is the most amazing sunset spot. There are some steps that go from the edge of the medina up to the top of the medina following the big outer wall. An amazing view from the top also! If you would like to get henna done, there are some ladies in the main square. If you are good at haggling then time to try out your skills, although it is much more relaxed then Marrakesh and people are not trying to con you out of a lot of money here!
