You can usually smell the burnt oil from leaky valve guides. As far as noise it is not unusual to hear a little chain slap at idle, it should go away as soon as you rev and the engine should be smooth. Bring a flashlight. Look in the tank for rust. Check the tires for dry cracks. Bring an 18mm spark plug socket and pull the plugs to look them over. If it has air forks see if they are holding 15psi more or less. See how much brake pad is left.
