Over 80 students took part, either acting and singing, dancing, in the band, backstage and technical, or Front of House. There were four sold-out performances before half term and the audiences enjoyed a gritty tale of students at the Academy of Performing Arts in New York as they pursue their dreams of stardom. The performances were high-energy with exuberant dancing and singing throughout and some great individual performances, notably from Connie Lamb as Carmen, who stopped the show at the end by appearing on top of a full size New York yellow taxi. There were some exceptional individual performances as well as some great relay results. As they waited patiently for the results which were announced in reverse order, it became clear that they had finished in the top three. Well done all of you! The event was organised and sponsored by Northampton Saints and included a lot of private schools. Our boys played very well, finishing second in their group. The Sixth Form students had plenty of opportunities to network with current University students of German and a careers panel provided various answers to the question how German can enhance your career prospects. The speakers spoke mainly in German which was a great learning experience as was being able to spend the day at one of Cambridge's oldest colleges. Both our under 14 and our over 14 swimming squads qualified for the area final having done well in their heat. The structure of the gala is that students cover 5 individual events and two relays and teams consist of both boys and girls. Our junior team had some very promising results and it was really lovely to see the high standard of performance. Our senior team were hoping that if they all managed their best performances they might have a chance of finishing in the top two. When the results were announced they were so excited and proud to hear they had won the overall title against some tough opposition. The Year 10 boys have progressed to the next round of the County Cup. A hard fought game against Bungay High School resulted in a win. Three late goals sealed a deserved win. Farlingaye managed to play some slick football, we kept the ball well and created a host of chances. A change of formation seemed to suit the team. We played with three at the back and overloaded the midfield. George Ferguson and Matt Sheridan had the task of patrolling each wing. Euan Childs had an accomplished game breaking up opposition play and setting us on our way with fluent passing. Bungay offered a physical challenge but little else and was a fair representation of the game. The team travel to Mildenhall for the quarter finals. I have been working with Year 6 students at Gorseland Primary School, in Martlesham Heath to create two large scale murals for display in the Gorseland School grounds. The students looked at the work of artist Charlie O'Sullivan in preparation for the paintings and created designs in response to her work and drawing from imagery of old war planes. Students used acrylic paints and stencilling techniques to create the murals. To view the full article, please click here. On February10 th we commenced our 28 hour journey to Folgarida located in the stunning Italian Dolomites. After a well-earned sleep and continental buffet breakfast; we headed out to the slopes. We had five ski groups, with everything from first timers to absolute pros! After a morning of skiing we regrouped for lunch at a restaurant on top of the mountain with amazing views! It was a great location. On our last day we even started an impromptu party with the locals and a DJ! The after-eight challenge and limbo competition were particular highlights! Forum February On Saturday January 28 th , students and teachers of Spanish from the local area came together at Farlingaye for a day of talks and workshops on all things Spanish. The day started with a live performance of Spanish guitar music by Mr Hynes, parent of Paddy Hynes in Year 13, and Dr Packard, from the University of Suffolk talked about his current research on Basque refugee children, who came to Suffolk during the Spanish Civil War. Alfredo Castro from the University of East Anglia delivered a talk on how studying languages enhances your employability, as well as running an interactive creative writing workshop. During the lunch break, delegates completed a quiz on Spanish culture and enjoyed a selection of delicious Spanish food and drink. The day was rounded off with a prize draw. Each country was represented by two teachers and a student, who brought their own experience and curriculum expectations to the group. Over the course of the week we expanded our knowledge of 3D thinking and the technology involved with 3D printing. This was done through exchanging of experiences and being taught by an expert in the field, Jonathan Keep. Evenings were to create networking opportunities and explore the town. The students of the course were tasked with creating a logo for the project. In September all students in Years 7 to 10 were issued with a Reading Passport by their English teachers. Students who undertook the challenge found themselves virtually travelling around the world, stopping off in New York City, Sydney and Beijing. Every time a student reached one of these landmarks they would be rewarded with commendations and those students who travelled all the way around the world found themselves with a ticket to the end of term raffle! All students praised the Reading Passport, saying how much it had encouraged them to read and explaining how it had given their parents an opportunity to be more involved with their reading at home. Students chose products ranging from toothbrushes, bins and shoes to fridges and worked out ingenious ways they could utilise the internet to benefit our lives. Over students enthralled parents and members of the local area with their musical talents in a series of musical concerts. On Thursday December 6 th , they kicked off the season with the school concert in front of a delighted audience of There was a cake sale of delicious bakes, raising money for a local charity. The singing was beautiful - two performances of 40 minutes in the living room of Tranmer House, singing Christmas songs and carols to an audience of about 50 each time, with solos by Amber, Luke, Mia, Lotte, Annie and Katharine. In between the performances we sang a few carols in the main reception area. With lovely weather, free mince pies and a relaxed atmosphere this was a super way to get into the Christmas spirit. The sheer scale of plot twists seem to sneak up on you and flip your understanding of this secretive and mysterious world. This blood curdling series is made up of the perfect mix of magic, mystery and horror… and you never know who or what is over the next page. Shortlisted for many literary awards this novel is both a gripping detective story and a haunting depiction of the decline of the human mind through Dementia. Healey creates a captivating voice of a woman struggling with her changing world; in a compassionate, yet funny and poignant way. Due to the dual narrative, an interwoven story showing the confusion of the present, mixed with Maud's very vivid memories of her past, I remained engaged throughout and felt rewarded with an interesting and intricate plot. This novel is an intelligent, funny; yet very sad, page-turner. The traditional Christmas hamper competition was held last term, with each tutor group producing a fantastic work of art and filling it with goodies for people in need. The unique ideas and variety of models was astounding and the full array of hampers on display in the dining hall on Thursday December 15 th was fantastic. The sense of anticipation crackled like electricity in the air before the staff pantomime at the end of last term. They reacted in traditional style to the wicked, vain Gaston Mr Tunaley and the truly terrifying Beast Dr Sievewright. Belle Miss Gilmour held the story together, and there were cameos from staff as Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs Potts, Chip the Teacup, in fantastic costumes some of which were made in-house. Forum December This year we have entered two swimming Galas for local schools. Each team had to have a mixture of boys and girls and races were over the 50m distance. I am delighted to say that both our teams have qualified for the final in February and our over 14 team in particular look like strong contenders for the title. We had an amazing few weeks, with so many staff and students being involved, it was a delight to experience the excitement and thought the activities elicited. The fortnight started with a number of competitions, setting up the challenge of the fortnight for the students. From here language taster sessions, history and world affairs lectures, science seminars, open mic concerts, cooking workshops and artists in residence interspersed the mountain biking, song writing and theatre workshops. What an amazing opportunity for us all to reflect on the world in which we live and where we have come from! Displays are now around the school reminding us not only of the fun we had but also to reinforce these key messages. A strong line-up faced the visiting team, Hartismere, in the County Cup clash. Teddy Baker was available after missing the last game due to ITFC Academy commitments, Euan Childs was also back into the midfield after being absent with an injury. Farlingaye looked the stronger team right from the start and exerted some good pressure on our opposition. Josh Knight went close with a couple of chances and we looked very comfortable at the back, Tom Curtis was hardly called into action at all in the Farlingaye goal. As part of our continued attempts to make the school grounds a bit more wildlife friendly, the Green Council members have been creating some hedgehog homes this term. According to the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, hedgehog numbers have declined by up to one third in the last ten years, so we were keen to add this to our previous wildlife projects such as the bird boxes and insect hotels. Across a Monday and Friday, we explored a variety of things from succession to biodiversity across the reserve. What an awesome job we have done together with the shoe boxes this year as a school. We have managed to make, sort and gift wrap shoe boxes that are on their way with all the boxes from Suffolk in the next few days. Additionally, the award of 17 Silver and 29 Bronze certificates really emphasises the Maths talent across the senior year groups. Following the Senior Maths Challenge, around 3, students are invited to sit a follow on competition called the Senior Kangaroo. I am delighted to announce that three of our students, Mia Gaines, Kieran Harris and Alex Cooke all scored highly enough to qualify for this competition. They will sit the paper in the coming weeks. On Saturday December 19 th , over 60 students from 10 local schools met for a day of talks and workshops on all things German. The day started with an inspiring talk by Liam Flin in Year 13, about his participation in the German Scholarship Programme, a scheme for talented students of German, funded by the German government. I was anxious when I heard Harry Potter was making a comeback; I loved the original stories so much that I feared nothing could match them. I thought I might as well just pop to the bookshop, have a look at the front cover…. Of course I had to buy it, this is Harry Potter! The answer to this last question is tricky, especially if your name is Albus Severus Potter and you are the youngest son of the famous Harry Potter. This book has everything Harry Potter fans loved about the originals: tension, drama, humour, sadness and of course…magic! Beth Fewings and her horse, Sean, competed in the 90cm and 1m classes. If you are interested in joining the Equestrian club, please see Mrs Gray. I took part in the British Schools Orienteering Championships three weeks ago and won a national gold medal! This took a lot of commitment and training and after 2 years of winning bronze or silver medals, I finally got gold. Orienteering is a sport that involves a mix of cross country running and map reading. Everybody starts at different times and you need to get round all the checkpoints in the fastest time possible; however you need to find your way to each checkpoint using your map. This particular event was structured slightly differently, there were 30 checkpoints and you needed to go to as many checkpoints as possible in 45 minutes. I do an orienteering course every week and attend a special training session with the East Anglian Junior Squad every month. This helps me with both my map reading and my running. I am also a member of the Farlingaye and Framlingham running clubs. All this training finally paid off and now I have my British gold medal. On November 3 rd , Alfie Carpenter visited our school to work with students across all year groups as an artist in residence for a day. Alfie is a former student of Farlingaye who is now a successful professional artist exhibiting in Suffolk and across the UK. Students explored ideas based around the theme of 'Origins' for our focus fortnight. They experimented with transforming found materials, such as old clothing, letters and stamps and other discarded items into beautiful mixed media landscapes. Alfie shared ideas about layered compositions and building an artwork through use of a range of textures, mark making and collage techniques. Students thoroughly enjoyed the day and the experience of working with a practising artist. Forum November Thanks for all your entries. During the session, Mark demonstrated how to make fresh pasta using just flour and water, no pasta machine needed, so the students could have a go at home. The students also made a tiramisu and a selection of bruschetta using pancetta, sundried tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, garlic and a whole selection of ingredients. All our players found the going tough and some were not pleased with their score cards after However, Taylor Crisp had a superb round and won his division with an exceptional net score of 63, shooting well below his handicap. He had a particularly impressive back 9, where he shot level par. This is the first time Taylor has represented the school team and long may it continue. Students from Year 9 were lucky enough to go to the Suffolk Skills Show at Trinity Park, where over different exhibitors were on hand to talk to young people about jobs and industries they are interested in. The Show was especially exciting for one of our students as he won one of the competitions being held by an exhibitor. The English Faculty continue their book recommendations…. This book is inspired by the true story of a man who might have been able to prevent World War II. The book is full of mystery and emotions that take you from laughing to crying, plus leaving cliff-hangers on nearly every chapter. This story is about a little boy, called Barney, who is on a train because his house was destroyed by bombs in World War II leaving his family homeless. Their pet horse, called Big Black Jack is missing. The train is under attack from German fighters and in the darkness a stranger, tells them stories to pass time and to stop them from worrying. The eagerly awaited start of the Year 10 football season kicked off a week before the half- term break. It was the National Cup Competition and a rare home fixture. We were drawn against Langley who came with a strong reputation having beaten our Year 9 lads convincingly earlier in the season. Since my arrival, Tim has been annually elected to Chair the Governing Board and during his tenure has worked tirelessly to help Farlingaye remain one of the top publicly funded schools in the County. There have been two cross country events so far and both have been extremely successful. The first competition we enter is the National Schools Cup, this is split into three rounds; a County round followed by a Regional round and then, for the best teams in the Country, a National Final. The day began surprisingly warm and sunny with seven seniors and six juniors taking part in 11 different racing categories at the Yare Cup in Norwich. The competition was divided into two divisions to allow competitors time to row the 6k to the start line before racing the m course and returning home. Exhibitions were set up in the Technology block and projects and products were on display for Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Systems and Control and Textiles. As part of a project Liam Flin in Year 13 is currently completing after winning the German Scholarship this summer, he went to Kyson Primary School to deliver a German taster session to a group of children in KS2. The shop is involved with the Gift Your Gear scheme, which was set up in by Sarah Howcroft, one of the original founders of Rohan. Students in Years 7 to 10 have all received a reading passport, which asks students to track their reading. They are aiming to complete a minimum of 30 minutes reading a week although we would urge for more! Hopefully you have already seen these at home. As students travel around the world, there will be prizes recognising their effort in reading. On Monday September 5 th , students in Year 11 began the academic year by taking up their Work Experience placements. The range of placements was as wide as ever. Local employers were once again very willing to offer our students a huge number of very exciting and varied opportunities. The Music Tour was to Austria. Austria was brilliant, the weather not so kind for the first day and then we had beautiful sun. We performed two concerts, although rain stopped us playing at one venue. It was a beautiful venue with a lake and mountains as the back drop. We spent time sightseeing, swimming and playing sports. The hotel was lovely and the food great. One evening we had an Open Mic night and another we had a traditional Austrian meal in Salzburg. The tour is a great opportunity for the students to mix with other year groups and other musicians, they work as part of a team to produce some wonderful music that enthrals audiences.
