Experienced by an amateur adrenaline junkie like myself, perhaps many of you reading this will relate fairly effortlessly. Bungee Jumping is not as physical as perceived. Although you are literally flying at full speed ,with only a bundle of tiny elastic threads keeping you from plummeting to your death at m below. You clench your body so tight- reacting naturally to that stomach-dropping feeling you get on a roller-coaster, except this time its ten times more real. When you near the end of your ropes lee-way , you begin to relax your muscles and zone out , staring at the world upside down , realising how small us humans are and how vulnerable we are to mother nature. There is a moment when it almost feels as if you stay completely still in the air for two seconds- then your stomach drops again. This was one of my favourite moments of bungee jumping off Bloukrans Bridge. I hung upside down with several emotions and feelings going through my mind and body. Waves of euphoria and happiness pulsed through me. I started screaming out of joy, hoping that everyone metres above me could hear me over the music on the bridge. I could barely hear the thumps of bass or screaming from above. I was alone. Alone in this incredible space. Blessed to be alive , blessed by our Mother Nature and blessed to love myself. I cannot recall how long before a Face Adrenaline ab sailer descended down towards me like a sneaky spider from my patio ceiling. I have never met this man , nor have I ever seen him. He did some fancy hand work to my harness and pulled me upright to a sitting position, I was sitting in a pure nothingness of air. We began moving up towards the bridge ,eventually greeted by three smiley faces who pulled me up and lay me on my back to unwrap my ankles. Photos were taken seconds after standing up. I was nervous to jump into a cloud of fog , however the weather cleared up in 2 hours to our advantage. Wear flexible clothes. Avoid dresses, high waisted shorts, loose crop tops or boob tubes- wear clothes that will stick to your body when you are hanging upside down. Wear closed shoes , purely for the mesh bridge that you walk over to get to the centre of the bridge. Most people jump barefoot. The band around both your ankle tightens with your weight as you fall down and the rope pulls tight. You will not slip out of it and it cannot be tightened to its maximum whilst you are still on the bridge , else you could injure yourself or cut off blood circulation. You are so high off adrenaline and it feels longer but you only hang upside down for about 2 minutes before someone fetches you and flips you up right. These gadgets are sadly prohibited and Face Adrenaline encourage you to BUY their footage they film of you. Personally , I think the video is of below average quality but the photos are good. Personally , this was one of the scariest moments for me. Thin metal wire mesh sits between you and a deep plummet. Everytime you take a step, this wire bends under the weight of your foot. I held up the group with my slow sloth like movement. My legs were numb and scared. I kept my head up and did not look down. I tried closing my eyes which helped, and then I told myself to grow a pair! I took a deep breathe and told myself , if I can cross this bridge confidently then I can jump. And this self mentoring worked temporarily until i got distracted. Each to their own then. Listen to what the staff say to you before you jump. Keep in mind that no matter how you jump you will always be safe but you have a chance of getting injured or not enjoying it to the best of your potential. I jumped feet first, not because Im a rebel but because it was my natural instinct to jump feet first off a bridge and not head first. The worst that happened to me was that I had the slightest bit of a jerk when i changed from feet first to head first. If you jump feet first , you can easily move your weight forward and change your fall. After you hop to the edge of the bridge, the Face Adrenaline instructors point at the camera half a metre in front of your head. There are no second takes or edits. Make the most out of your experience and say what you want to. When you get off the bridge and onto the grassy areas where the bricks are, you will still be on a hectic adrenaline rush. You feel like you are Christopher Collumbus whom just discovered the Americas. You will probably want to bungee jump again in 2 minutes. This period of time, is so valuable and I encourage you to make the most out of this euphoric high , and make daring but responsible decisions right after. Burst out of your comfort zone. Prepping to jump , nerves starting to kick in. Only girl! Book your Bungee Jump the day before if you are uncomfortable jumping in wet weather. Dress comfortably and wear closed shoes. Dont stress about the blood rushing to your head and fainting You are so high off adrenaline and it feels longer but you only hang upside down for about 2 minutes before someone fetches you and flips you up right. Conquer the bridge walk , conquer the jump! Fall head first like a graceful dove and DONT bomb drop! Smile for the camera!
