Itinerary for Myanmar. More and more people visit this country every year, especially in peak season from November to February, so I guess during this time some places can get pretty crowded. Despite its growing popularity, in shoulder season from May to June, we were the only international travelers in most of the places and locals were taking photos with us everywhere we went. In Bagan, which is top Burmese destination, we met just few other tourists I could honestly count them on my fingers , which is today quite unusual. Here is our 11 day itinerary around the country. This airline was truly a great surprise! Even though the flight was only 1. We arrived to Mandalay late in the evening and by the time we got to our hotel we were quite tired so we just went to get some food and sleep before the next day. We spent in Mandalay one full day but with a private driver, who took us around, we managed to see quite a lot from this city, which is the 2 nd largest in Myanmar. On relatively small space you can find over temples and pagodas, a royal palace, markets and modern buildings, all together set along the banks of Ayeyarwady River. In one and half day in Mandalay we managed to visit many temples and other popular places. Keep reading to find out which. All the places are amazing and especially this temple looks like from a different world! The longest bridge made of teak wood in the world. Many people come here for the sunset and take a boat ride on the river. It was built by King Mindon and it contains all the Buddhist texts and teachings that are engraved in marble stones and placed around the main big golden stupa. Mandalay got its name after this hill that rises above the town. Myanmar is home to more than hundred ethnic groups and minorities and each of them has their own special way of food preparation. This makes Burmese cuisine really unique and delicious! In Mandalay, we ate in these restaurants I can recommend all of them as all the food we ate was simply great: Itinerary for Myanmar. On our 3 rd day we said goodbye to Mandalay and continued our journey to Bagan. The original plan was to go by scenic ferry on the river which takes about 9 hours and it stops in a traditional fishing village along the way. The bus ride, although long, was quite comfortable as the seats could be adjusted to the sleeping position. Trains are not an option in Myanmar unfortunately. I liked the train rides through Vietnam, but here they take long and they are not comfortable so for long distances bus or air transport are your only options. Bagan was my favorite place not only in Myanmar but in whole Southeast Asia and it belongs to one of my most beloved trips up to date! There are thousands of Buddhist pagodas and temples on relatively small space and you can discover every day new ones and new ones. Some of them are in very good condition but on others you will be able to see signs not to enter or get close because of falling bricks and rocks. Because we loved Bagan so much and I have many photos to share, I prepared a separate article about our adventures there and travel tips, which you can find here. From Bagan we took and over-night bus to Inle Lake. The journey lasted about 10 hours but we were able to get some sleep as it was proper sleeper bus. For 26 USD for both of us we got some pastry for dinner, water, coke and a package with wet towel, small toothbrush and a tooth paste. We got to the town Nyaung Shwe at 4 am and went straight to our hotel. There were some taxis waiting for the bus arrive so we got to our hotel easily. I booked ours on this website here , which offers different transportation options around Myanmar. Nyaung Shwe is the biggest town nearby Inle Lake and also has an airport. Most hotels and restaurants are located here and usually prices for accommodation are cheaper than the hotels which are located directly on the lake. It is located among the mountains in the m height above the sea level, which made this place quite inaccessible in the past, therefore its way of life, culture and traditions developed without any outside influences. This fact makes Inle Lake area very special and quite different from the rest of Myanmar. We stayed in Inle Lake for three days and similarly to Bagan, I loved and absolutely enjoyed our time here, therefore, I wrote a separate article that you can find here with all the necessary information. After Inle Lake, we had one last stop on our Myanmar itinerary and that was Yangon. We booked a driver from our hotel to get there in the morning and to be there an hour and half before the flight, but as we found out after the arrival to Heho, this time frame was unnecessarily long. Heho airport is very small, it looks more like an old bus station. Then a guy took our luggage somewhere without putting a note on it where it should go. The airport has only one line for tiny airplanes and people stand on it to signal them where to go. They have a tractor that carries the luggage from the one and only terminal to the plane. I was surprised and amused by this place. But if you have limited time, extra money and you trust that everything will end up well, go for it! Just keep an open mind, because this airport is in the middle of nowhere and it functions probably just by a miracle! We flew with national Myanmar Airways , and from my experience I can say they were quite good. The flight to Yangon was short and we got there early in the afternoon. We hailed a taxi at the airport and went straight to the hotel as in Yangon, there was a mild storm welcoming us. Then the military government decided to build a new capital Nay Pyi Taw in the middle of a jungle, but none of the locals wanted to relocate so today Nay Pyi Taw is famous as a ghost city. Now back to Yangon! We stayed two nights and I think one would be more than enough. During our one full day here we visited these places:. This is the most famous and sacred pagoda in Myanmar. The entrance fee for international tourists is 10, MMK per person. This is the only temple where you have to pay, the rest is fortunately free. I am not sure if you will be able to actually find this place or go inside, but we met a monk in Nga Htat gyi Pagoda, who took us there. This is really great in Yangon, and in Myanmar in general, that people want to talk to you and tell you their story. We experienced many amazing encounters with locals and I am forever thankful for that. A very nice modern pagoda not far from Shwedagon. Inside of this temple you can find 60 m long sleeping Buddha with a bit strange choice of make-up and nail polish — worth to see. Just across the street from Sleeping Buddha you can find this temple with big sitting Buddha. A nice big green city park. Chinatown is full of great restaurants in the middle of the city. Our hostel Baobabed was located there. You can find many colonial buildings here, even though some of them are not in their best shape. I was disappointed to find out that there is no nice walk along the river in Yangon. In my imagination, there was some sort of promenade where we can take a walk similarly to Hue in Vietnam , but no. From Yangon we flew to Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines. It was only us and one Australian guy who missed the flight, but lucky for us the airline representatives had enough of courtesy to give us a hotel for the night and we could stay in the business lounge the next day as the flight was scheduled at 7 pm. Yangon airport is very nice international airport, nothing like the one in Inle Lake. Ah well… What is backpacking without a little bit of struggle and last minute change of plans, right? However, you can check on Grab app how much the journey would approximately cost. If we needed a driver for the whole day, they always called us one from the hotel we were staying in and the price was set in advance. Other great option to quickly get around the city are tuk-tuks which are present everywhere. We bought Ooredoo provider right at the airport. It had 10GB of internet, plus 20 min. The reception was pretty good everywhere we went and the only annoying thing was that they were sending us 10 to 15 messages daily. Every nationality needs visa upon arrival to be able to visit Myanmar. The process is quite easy and fast, you can apply online via this link and after filling out the application and paying visa fee, you should get the visa on your email within a week. A single entry tourist visa cost approximately 50 USD. The price may vary depending on particular country you are from. One day we got lost in the desert around Bagan, when we were trying to find a pagoda to climb on. We met a local man who invited us for breakfast to his house and even though I hesitated at first, we decided to go and followed him to his house in small village nearby. We spent a lovely morning with his family, teaching English his kids, who were university students and they taught us some Burmese language in return. Burmese people are very lovely. They are engaging, curious, talkative and generous. So this was a sum-up of our time in Myanmar. It was a magical experience and it was definitely my favourite country during our trip in SE Asia! People are friendly, helpful and keen to make a good impression. I was surprised at how easy it was to travel and get around different places. Hotels were good, planes reliable and WiFi fast in most places. Things are changing fast, so this was a good time to visit. You can see that places like Bagan and Inle Lake will soon be too touristy. On the other hand, some things get easier, as there are ATMs easily available and credit cards are accepted. That was a good range of places and a good amount of time. I knew Myanmar was a good place to travel alone, but it was better than I imagined. But what made the biggest different was how easy it was to explore, either independently or in tours. Food in Myanmar is really delicious — you can get great curries and a wide range of dishes made with local ingredients. Especially the salads are really unique and yummy. I found flying a good option, the service always worked well and tickets are not very expensive. In cities you can get around by taxi, or in smaller towns by bike or e-bike. Everywhere I went it was easy to navigate and you can actually do a lot on foot too. I downloaded maps of all the places I visited onto Google Maps which was really useful. There are lots of exchange places and most hotels can change money too. I also really liked getting a bike and cycling around the lake — this is a bit more DIY and you can skip all the tourist stuff if you want. Nyaungshwe the town where most people stay is quite small and easy to navigate on foot. There are a few streets where all the restaurants are, and also plenty of places organising tours and renting bikes. The atmosphere is quite chilled and there are plenty of places for a break and a drink. The most popular activity to do in Inle is to get a boat tour around the lake 15,MMK. You get to see lots of villages on stilts with people going about their lives. There are also some nice monasteries, lots of bird life and even floating vegetable gardens. The famous balancing fishermen are few and far in between now, but you still get to see some of them. You also stop at many local workshops where you can buy all sorts of handicraft — this is a bit touristy but can also be interesting. I bought a scarf made by Kayan women known for their elongated necks. The trip takes about 6h, and it can get really cold in the lake, so you need to bring a good jumper but also wear lots of sunscreen. I rented a bike for the day 2,MMK and set off exploring. I followed this useful itinerary and did the Inle Lake loop, which took about 5h. My first stop was Shwe Yan Pyay, a wooden pagoda with a unique design. I then cycled southwest past the hot spring. You get to see Inle Lake, which is great, but also you end up at a little village with a long wooden walkway which is very picturesque. I then followed the road on the east side up to Red Mountain Winery. This is a popular place with tourists and definitely worth a visit. You can taste 4 types of wine for 5,MMK enjoying the view. A great place to visit is Htet Eian Cave, a huge cave filled with thousands of Buddha statues. The site itself is really interesting, the cave is really huge and there are Buddha statues wherever they can fit. Further inside the cave it gets really muddy, hot and slippery you need to leave your shoes at the entrance. I followed this with a visit to Lavender Spa II , which had great foot reflexology 19,MMK for 1 hour — expensive for Myanmar, but absolutely worth it. Then a little trip to Red Mountain Winery for a glass of wine and snacks with a view. You can do all of this on a half-day trip. This whole trip is a fun thing to do as you get to see lots of villages on the way, farmers in the fields and kids playing around. I went to Aung Puppet Theatre tickets 5, one evening. Getting around by bike is a good way of seeing many of the temples. You can basically just go anywhere around Old Bagan and start temple-spotting. The main temples are a bit busy and there are usually stalls selling handicraft around them, but most smaller temples are completely empty and you have the place to yourself. You can also just take a turn into any side road to find lots of little temples, they are literally everywhere. You can climb up some of the temples to get stunning views of nearby pagodas — this way you get an understanding of the scale of the place. The smaller temples can sometimes be more interesting simple because on an unusual detail or because you can explore by yourself. The best thing is to actually find a temple off the beaten path to climb up and enjoy the view by yourself. You just need to wander around a bit until you find one locals will often point it out. I took a taxi 15,MMK, a bit expensive to watch the sunset. The pagodas can get quite busy, and especially since the earthquake, not many pagodas are available to climb, so everyone ends up in the same places. I wanted the sunset at Bulethi temple, which has amazing views. It is a truly magical experience, seeing all the pagodas in the changing light and the countryside in different colours. Watching a sunrise from a pagoda is a highlight of any trip to Bagan, so I woke up at 4h30am. A big crowd gathered at Bulethi temple, but it was definitely worth it. You have plenty of time to take in the atmosphere and take a million photos of the light changing over the misty pagodas. I took a shared taxi to Mount Popa, which is about 1h30 from Bagan. Mt Popa is a sacred mountain of volcanic origin with a pagoda at its top. Climbing the steps to get there and fielding monkeys drinking from half-empty cans of Coke, you are greeted with great views over the countryside. This is a nice trip to do as long as you have enough time in Bagan. You can book a shared taxi for 10,MMK which picks you up at your hotel at 9am and drops you off at 2pm. There are many ways to visit Bagan. I chose to book everything independently but spending a bit on comfort. Bagan is a unique place. The countryside landscape filled with thousands of pagodas in a place that otherwise would be completely unremarkable really makes for a surreal sight. I spent 4 days in Bagan which is a good amount of time to see everything without rushing. And with the large number of tourists, there is risk to their structure. So I think this was definitely the right time to visit! But you do find interesting things around, like the odd street market with nice food stalls. I was unlucky with the weather in Mandalay as it was cloudy and a bit rainy very cold for locals at 22 degrees. The area to the east of Mandalay Palace has less traffic and so is nicer to explore on foot. For dinner I went to the popular Mingalabar , a restaurant serving delicious food with the most insanely large portions a small feast for one including drinks and tip for 9,MMK. I went for a foot massage at Innwa and it was great. Downtown Yangon is easy to navigate and you can go everywhere on foot if you can stand the heat. You can lose yourself for a few hours covering the many different areas to see. Shwedagon Pagoda is the main highlight of Yangon. The place is incredible, there are lots of amazing buildings and you can easily spend a few hours taking in all the details and people-watching. Health Blessing: at the end of my trip I decided to visit this massage spa for a foot massage 1h for 12,MMK. The service was very good and they have many locations around Yangon. Circular line: You can take a train around Yangon. It takes 3h for the full loop, and you see busy markets, farmland and people going about their lives. Inside the train, people selling all sorts of snacks come and go. My carriage was taken over by vegetables being taken to markets, which was an unusual sight but there are many. This is definitely a fun thing to do in Yangon. Search for:. Pub Asiatico : this is a cool bar clearly set up for foreigners, but serving cheap cocktails 2,MMK at happy hour and with good atmosphere. My preferred option was exploring by bike, as you can see lots of things off the beaten track. Bagan is the highlight of any trip to Myanmar, so I had high expectations. Another popular activity is to watch the sunrise and sunset from the top of a pagoda. Food: I went for dinner at Sanon , a social enterprise training local youths to work at and run restaurants. I had lunch at Moon , a popular vegetarian place close to Old Bagan. The food was really delicious and the place is great lunch for one for 6,MMK. They also have a great selection of juices. Weather Spoons is a popular place with tourists and much better than its British counterpart. Go: I chose to fly in, which is definitely the fastest option. Get around: Most people rent and electric bike to get around, but I got a normal bike 2,MMK for half a day. You can cover a lot of ground just riding around and stopping at some pagodas along the way. Food: Nourish is a vegan place catering for expats and tourists. They also have a yoga studio on site.
