Or: Register to be a proper snow-head, all official-like! Prev topic :: Next topic. Poster: A snowHead. Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person. I really don't know why I have a hankering to go to Ischgl. Although I had a great holiday there it really wasn't worth the extra expense. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see? Quote: you should rejoice that a small number of resorts are able to charge premium prices for people who are prepared to pay them. It means that there are other resorts who have to fight for your custom by keeping their prices competitive. Big them up.. You need to Login to know who's really who. Our really good meal for 4 last night cost around euros. Very good quality meat - steak, chicken and veal, and more than we could eat for the pierrade, super chips and gratin dauphinoise, salad ad lib, house plonk and deserts all round, including 2 great creme brulees. None of us was complaining about the price, which was very reasonable. Stunning - 24 degrees, like being in the south of France, it was. By the water. And it was the only eatery around, so it wasn't just lots of competition - and Lake Annecy is an expensive area. It's just so crazy that people insist on generalising so wildly about costs in different countries - especially when they have only visited one or two resorts in each. Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do. There's no arguing about that, the facts speak for themselves. There are good value places to be found in France, yes, nobody suggests otherwise. Sounds like you are lucky to be in one such area. That, I cannot explain nor understand. The beer is better in Austria too. You'll need to Register first of course. It's Hell in Switzerland. Then you can post your own questions or snow reports Just got back from Obertauern yesterday. Having read the above even the over inflated Obertauern prices seem OK 7. Beer was steep at 4 Euros a wheat beer. Espresso 2. I ski Austria as the prices are more reasonable, and the Apres is definately better! Was in Hinterglemm in March, deemed expensive by Germans I never paid more than 15 Euros for lunch and a beer with service. I'll continue to avoid Val. I went once Too British, too expensive, and too many people there because they thought skiing was the thing to do not becuase they loved it. I love espace Killy area Ski Tyke 's comment about 20 Euros for someone to carry skis has given me a cracking idea for my new career! I've been carrying kiddie's skis for them all week After all it is free. How much was regular coffee? You'll get to see more forums and be part of the best ski club on the net. Where were you? Not been there for a few years, but that does not match my recollections of Val's centre. T the other ends of the resoprt, there are perfectly good lifts at La Daille - and a lift to off-piste heaven at Le Fornet. That is half the point of the place. True by the standards of many other resorts, particularly those of Austria. Ski the Net with snowHeads. It was easier with skis and stuff to walk down to the main street uphill on the way back though! I guess I prefer the piste grading in Austria and Italy. Just a bit more confidence inspiring although I can't really be described as an 'early intermediate', I've been an intermediate for over 25 years What I meant was, firstly, that I agreed with you about the run grading, and then that the average standard of runs is so high that - for those who are beginners and early intermediates, Val D'Isere is not in my opinion the best resort. Even the green down to La Daille Verte has steepish pitches for the grade, often with a very unpleasant surface. And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports. Hey, I know my skiing standard is rubbish. There were some very easy runs at VDI up at the top of Bellevarde. But I'm not sure where I stand on these enormous resorts where you can't possibly cover it all in a week. I daresay it's a ploy to entice you back again another time. But I kinda like the idea of going to a different resort each season. One life, so many destinations So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much. You know it makes sense. Still don't think I've come anywhere near skiing the whole pisted area and I'd probably never dare attempt a French black These days I have no burning desires to go back to France though. Other than the cost factor, it's much harder to find the sort of accommodation I want, although my ski buddies have talked enthusiastically about Serre Che so may give that a whirl Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:. What the smeg is a powerade? No better, no worse, its the same thing really. I didn't know what that meant either but my curiosity got the better of me and I googled it Quote: I'd probably never dare attempt a French black I could show you some fairly easy French blacks. But much depends on grooming, doesn't it. There's a black Leisse? I expect some of the smaller Austrian areas, like some of the smaller French areas, upgrade some of their more difficult runs to black to make people feel good! Masque , Quote: HH, I never trust women who buy bananas. If you are getting at what I am thinking you are getting at, you might be worried that its my husband that uses the most!!! Quote: What the smeg is a powerade. Water with sugar in it. Alex A , it is crazy is't it? Just back from a week in Meribel, while it is very true that most places are extortionate, there are some exceptions, that is to say if you are prepared to eat snacks rather than fully fledged meals at lunchtimes. Gets my vote. If you go to the restaruant directly overlooking the Brown cow in Mottaret you can get a very nice plat du jour for 11 euro and there is a fantastic sandwhich bar for 3. Have to say it was very nice, but I wouldn't want to pay those prices every day, it's just not necessary for a family on a budget. And we're generally short of prices for American and Canadian resorts. Please do help if you can. Anyone who files prices will get a full analysis of the results, a subset of which will feed into the new edition of the book. Tesco's are opening a new store in Meribel for next winter - hurrah! I wonder if those local chalet owners could buy on tesco direct and pick up at their local store! A lot of people will have got excited there. Although as I understand it Rotherham is to re-launch as a sloaney Savoyard-esque Station du Ski, so there is still room for some excitement. New Topic Post Reply. Snow Snow Snow! Over the years I've always just rolled up to the resort and paid the price without really giving it too much thought. Up until now I've always thought that even the dearer resorts were good value for a day out and that the odd quid a day touch was a north american phenomenon. I daren't look at Verbier prices. Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person. Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see? Much the same in The Arlberg. Go to St. Anton and save yourself one euro per day! You need to Login to know who's really who. Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do. Think two years more back I have been paying the similar amount to ski 3V which is charging You'll need to Register first of course. The annual pass is quid and includes Chamonix - much better value. It's a bargain compared with North American resorts. Having said that, the Europeans sweat their mountain assets rather more than our transatlantic cousins - personally, I'd prefer pay extra for a quiet mountain. A one-day three vallees pass in Local passes e. A little up on last season's prices IIRC. And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports. There was a company doing discounted lift passes for 3 valleys last year although I can't remember who they were. Anyone know of any for this season? So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much. You know it makes sense. Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:. Was it these guys? Patch , ask your sis Mountainaddict had better get himself prepared for next February. I recall an earlier thread here which highlighted the outrage The football pricing analogy is a good one. Good value for money at The Bridge I'd say - especially when drying my eyes can quite often apply on my fortnightly visit to the Stadium of Light. Quote: Mountainaddict had better get himself prepared for next February. Haven't told Bergmeister yet but we're thinking of changing the Fernie booking to Eurodisney - I've heard it's cheaper than Fernie. Choices, choices Survive the credit crunch, buy AT gear lol. And back atcha! Quote: Twenty odd quid a day in Scotland Happy days and looking forward to another fantastic season. Sun and Mon the roads were closed due to too much snow. But hey it's the mountains, you pay your 20 quid and you takes your chance. Think you was lucky and I was unlucky, either way I wont be going back, skiing to Glenshee that is. Might well return back to that hotel for a trip in the summer and a few large Drambuies. Kel , I believe the bitter wind in the Scottish resorts, as we saw snow coming towards us horizontally in Glenshee, is that we are skiing at the top of the mountains. In the Alps we normally ski in a shielded area rarely have a need to stay at the mountain top. The wind in Glenshee can be experienced if you go up Hintertux glacier. The best value for money I came across was Tochal in Iran. The godola is 7km long and the resort is m. People can ski there up to June. Glencoe is in my top 10 anywhere in the world and if you do a search round the forum you'll find I'm not alone so I completely fail to understand your point, if it is a point! Kel , I wouldn't hold out for the summer in Scotland necessarily - Scotland any time of year seems to be an acquired taste, for example I spent 3 weeks there over the summer after a couple of weeks of thunder and lightening, wind, sun, storms and the works on the Hintertux glacier lol and had a fantastic time Aviemore and the Spey valley is probably my favourite place anywhere! My wife and kids had a great time too but she had 2 friends at work who went on family holidays there at the same time. One, kayaking and wilderness camping up the Great Glen, described it as one of the best holidays she had ever had, the other described it as the worst holiday she had ever had and would not go back there again if paid - horses for courses as they say! LOL, I must be calculating my age wrong then Off piste can be superb, especially given grooming is pretty rudimentary even on piste, and you'll get some idea of what I'm talking about on TGR, the thread here being an example from last season. I'm surprised anyone in the UK apart from Merchant Bankers can afford ski holidays anymore. Yes it is very expensive, but they want to be exclusive and keep the riff-raff like me out and I must say it works pretty well. Might see you up there snowpatrol. I don't find lift passes at all outrageous; in fact I think they're generally pretty good value. Consider a cable car that holds passengers and runs every 15 minutes. Now consider that the lift probably cost more than EUR10m to buy and install, and running the lift and grooming the associated runs provides employment for maybe 5 staff. Add in lift maintenance costs and operating revenues may be EUR, in a good year, at which time it's looking difficult just to pay interest on the loan taken out to acquire the lift. The simple answer is this: skiing's not cheap and is difficult to do cheaply. Mountainaddict I agree with you that the ski passes in Tignes are getting expensive. Although with the amount of skiing on offer the prices haven't gone up that much in recent years. However STGM do seem to be changing their policy slightly and are now offering family deals etc. They have also started working with the smaller companies based in the resort so we can now offer discounts on certain weeks. Normally only available for the mass market companies. Not a huge amount, but it's a start and every little bit helps. New Topic Post Reply. Snow Snow Snow!
