Jinx said:. If you strictly interprit 'Prince' according to the literal real world meaning, you are not going to understand Utena. You really do have to interpret it as 'the role of the 'prince' character archetype from traditional fairytales'. Which is an unwieldy term at best, so I hope you understand why they didn't use that everytime it was mentioned. No storytime? Guess Tutu came up with doing it every episode on its own. Anyway, we start off with a time-for-school scene reusing a number of shots from the last episode, including the scenery pans showing the huge ass-campus that makes up Ohtori Academy. The main thing here is three of Utena's blushing fangirls saying good morning to her with her casually responding in kind , with no fewer than four pink-rose-frame shots of her from their perspective -- head, feet, torso, and head again, this one in dramatic slo-mo. She said 'good morning' to you. I'm never gonna get celebrity-worship, am I? Of the American or Japanese variety. Or maybe what I don't get is the concept of the 'girl-crush. After the title card, we get our first glimpse of an actual co-ed classroom, which has some chairs that are Judging from the female voices greeting her, the girls in her class don't appear to be among her most devoted fangirls. We meet Wakaba for, as Utena recalls, the first time since last episode's love-letter debacle. The former is still all moodily OOC, so Utena tries to cheer her up with some forced conversation. I love the way her face is drawn in this scene. It's so goofily incongruous with her image. And it appears that the rule of Japanese dubbers paying less attention to lip-sync than American ones holds. The book Wakaba's reading -- she reads books? I approve -- is called Magnolia Waltz and appears to be in English, but has an author with a Japanese-looking name. Is it real? I'm afraid to Google for fear of spoilers. In her own words: Wakaba: 'Always. She's always loved this guy. But, after she's rejected, the next day she recovers, another man appears, and the heroine ends up with him. When I read this before, I thought it was the lamest, stupidest book. Now I read it and I think it's the greatest thing ever! Utena: 'If you don't know, then why do you do that? Because I like to. Prez: 'Is the Kendo team captain going to fight the middle school girl again? Saionji: 'Of course. The power to bring the world revolution belongs to me. That girl's engagement to the Rose Bride is a mistake. That girl Anthy Himemiya She belongs to me. She's to do as I command, forever. Saionji: 'That's what's written in my exchange diary. Saionji: 'But didn't you devote yourself to me completely when we were engaged? Saionji: 'Those who oppose the student council vanish from this campus! The school's regulations are quite specific. Do you know? Anthy: 'Be careful. It'd be stupid to get hurt in a duel I intend to lose. Utena: ' Grant me the power to bring the world revolution! Saionji: 'I admire your courage. You put the rose before your own life! Saionji: 'You understand. Living or dying doesn't matter. The one who loses their rose loses the duel. Saionji: 'It may be the Sword of Dios, but it has no special power by itself. In the end, it must be wielded by a great swordsman! Anthy: 'You didn't purposely lose? I did it for Chu-Chu Squeak. If you went with Saionji, he'd just tease Chu-Chu Squeak. KoboldLord Active member 15 Year Compatriot! Back to the actual content of the current episode, the first coure is very obviously running with a smaller budget than the later story arcs. The off-model moments and animation mistakes don't last forever, so I conclude that they probably aren't intentionally symbolic. Cut to StuCo. Do they even have classes? An elevator picks them up one by one, minus Saionji and Anthy, as a voiceover from Prez compares humanity in the world to a chick in its egg. I take it he's not advocating manned space travel here -- the key word for that is 'cradle,' and I rather like keeping Earth even after we've left it. Regardless, breaking the eggshell is apparently what 'the revolution of the world' means. So this is what, Gnosticism? Shay Guy said:. Utena paces outside a door for a few minutes -- the same? Uh, what? I think this is supposed to be the same room, and the animation doesn't suggest Utena's left the door, so did Anthy go in through a window? And repair the damage silently, within five minutes? What is she, an SCV? Is this Phenomenal Bridal Powa at work? And now it's time to introduce our newest cast member: Anthy's leetle friend, the mouse we saw in the preview, named 'Chu-Chu. We saw a mouse in the disaster-area room, but it didn't have the head-sized ears. Or earring. Or tie. Or hammerspace stomach. I love how rather than a rose frame, Squeak is introduced with a banana frame. Yeah, this is our comic-relief character all right. Utena rolls with it, earning points from me and winning Squeak's heart. Dinnertime, but Anthy's not there. Also, odd animation. Lots of fades. Utena's seal ring starts shining, a beam goes either up to or down from the phantom castle, and the specter of Prince Charming descends to embrace Utena. Whatever he does is blocked by a spinning white rose of the kind seen in the frames. Then Utena levitates with Prince Charming's image superimposed on her and charges Saionji their meeting frozen in red and blocked by another spinning white rose Once again, I must say it: What. Everybody's taken aback -- Saionji, Utena, Anthy, even Prez. The latter suspects that was 'the power to bring the world revolution,' aka 'the Power of Dios. Last edited: Aug 21, PenguinZero Wark! Any Utena WIWs you'd especially recommend? Oh, by the way? Nobody finds it at all weird that the Rose Bride is now engaged to another girl. The east dorm looks nice enough , until you go into one of the rooms, which is utterly trashed. No, I have no idea how that happened. And the animation cheats -- the shot of Utena opening the door doesn't have those cracks. OK, Utena? You've heard enough to know it means Anthy going back to Saionji. And Anthy? You've seen enough of Utena to know that she wouldn't like that. You're allowed to remind her if you think she's forgetting something. Aren't you? The song's growing on me, too. Though do any of the words in the outro mean anything, or is it just that there are 3! Das Ei ist die Welt. Der Vogel fliegt zu Gott. The egg is the world. Whoever wants to be born, must destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas. He's probably just a Chu-Chu. Ithaeur Adorably Draconic 20 Year Hero! Utena is one of my all-time favorites, so it's always a treat to see someone new to it going through the series. Crucially, for all of its intense weirdness and symbolism, almost everything in RGU makes sense , at least when you look back to it at the end. There's plenty of method to this madness! Also: Anthy probably isn't Japanese, despite her family name and fluency, and probably not Greek either, despite her first name. Some people suggest that she's Indian, on account of her skin color, but I'm dubious about that too. Personally, I think she's from Atlantis. Oct 27, 31, Just finished watching the series and man that shit was tight. It was definitely super weird and not without its issues. As funny as they were, there was a lot of filler. The Black Rose arc was repetitive as hell and honestly felt like filler. Maybe it was? I don't know. The animation for the fight scenes was not very good either. Lots of reused animation in them and more often than not, Utena just won. Like, she literally just wins out of nowhere and it got kind of old lol. She could be getting wrecked and then she just goes 'nah' and then just insta kills her opponent with. Spoiler: Villain stuff a scene where Akio is angrily driving his super cool car with Anthy in the passenger's seat moaning in pain as he pushed down on the accelerator. Obviously he wasn't literally going on a drive to relieve his frustrations and was instead molesting his sister. Spoiler So my understanding of everything was that when he was younger, Akio was someone who held some kind of miraculous power that he used to help people. However, this took a severe toll on his body which caused Anthy to stand up to the people's aggressive requests. They didn't like this so they killed her but not really? Tortured her? I'm assuming she's some kind of immortal. She became trapped…somewhere and Akio wanted to find a way to save her. He meets Utena and encourages her to become someone noble who can save his sister. Or maybe not really, it seemed like Utena set that goal herself once she saw Anthy and Akio encouraged her. Somewhere along the way, Akio kind of lost his shit and created the dueling games so that he could take someone's Sword of Dios and break the Rose Seal. So he grooms Utena into becoming this person but also into becoming more feminine and princess-like as almost like a way to make sure she doesn't become TOO powerful and he can simply convince her to give him the sword willingly, or worst case, take it away by force with little effort because he's a coward. At first I thought he wanted to free Anthy but he didn't seem to give a shit what the swords of hatred or whatever did to her so I guess not. The Anthy we see throughout most of the series wasn't physically her or something and the real one was the one Utena reaches out for in the end? Lord Fanny Member. Apr 25, 29, UltimateTrainer Member. Sailor Moon pre-dates Utena by a half decade, including the episodes directed by Ikuhara. I thought Utena was from the 70s. Mind blown. The Rose of Versailles - Wikipedia. You're probably thinking of The Rose of Versailles. It was a manga from the 70s that's had a few adaptations and highly influenced Utena and other similar animes. The main character is obviously an influence on Utena as she dresses in traditionally masculine clothes. Deleted member User-requested account closure Banned. Apr 3, 1, I had the VHS set. It was fucking brutal to know there was more of it unavailable. Thankfully a fansub group came in clutch a few years later with a translation. Took me like an entire week uninterrupted to get all the eps lol. Still do a rewatch every years. Also, the music is fucking unreal as well as the lyrics. Even the most filler-y duels have absolute bangers. Capra Member. Oct 25, 16, Astral said:. I still don't fully understand the ending and I'm assuming it makes more sense in the movie or something. Kapryov 'This guy are sick' Member. Oct 27, 10, Australia. I saw this for the first time in and loved the hell out of it. It's worth exploring all of Ikuhara's work, they're all kinda surreal. Penguindrum especially is really good. Now go watch the movie. It was on Funimation back in , maybe it's still there, so I assume it'll pop up on Crunchyroll eventually. Dec 16, 12, I never got to complete the show originally, though I did own the movie on DVD for years. I'm rectifying this because rightstuf had all 3 blu-ray sets on sale a few days ago and I snapped up all 3. Oct 27, 3, Nov 1, the Bay Area. Picked up the movie shortly after and the alternate retelling alongside the infamous 'lesbian luge' ending cemented me as a fan of the incomparable Kunihiko Ikuhara. I think the ending of the TV anime is absolutely beautiful and up there with the god-tier Evangelion TV ending in the sense that they're perfect and better than the movies IMO. That said, it's still Utena so I'll happily gobble it up over and over and take any additional stories they put out like After the Revolution! Funnily enough my wife and I just found the first five volumes of the manga in Japanese today and picked it up because, WHY NOT, it's fucking Utena and one of the best, coolest, and most kickass Japanese series of the past 40 years. Props to you for the awesome visuals in the OP. Oct 25, 6, He gave me the manga hardcovers a few Christmas's back. Not that reading the manga has helped me understand the show more. Nanami might be the single worst human being in an anime ever. Hambulance Member. Oct 30, 1, Nanami was such a bitch. Its about fucking. Nov 16, 16, Utena is one of the most important anime ever made. And if you want an explanation of the plot, there are lots of interpretations. My go to is usually Spoiler: Utena series spoilers It's an allegory for transitioning from teenager to adult. A lot of that transitioning has to do with sex before the character feels ready for it. You can picture Akio as the kind of guy that hides what kind of predator he is. The type that people say of 'oh, there's no way he could have done it, he's such a nice person'. Anthy is literally meant to be the woman in scarlet, the whore who will get victim-blamed for being raped. Utena embodies a lot of that white Knight behaviour, the ally that means well but fails to understand the victim and ends up at one point blaming them too. Oct 25, 5, Good OP Astral now report back after watching the movie. Hambulance said:. Oct 25, 32, I should watch it. Primus Member. Oct 25, 4, Hail Ikuhara and welcome to the rabbit hole. I've posted about my love of and deep connection to Utena before so I don't especially feel like going into it again. In fact I'm literally in the middle of episode 32 for my 5th full rewatch of the show right now. This is actually my first time watching the show by myself as it's an excellent series to enjoy with friends. But I figured I would watch it again to cap off the year and also seeing how the final episode aired Christmas Eve , almost 25 years to the day. Still can't believe I got introduced to the show from my brother finding the first VHS tape in the bargain bin at Kroger of all places. I was only about 9 at the time, and my only other exposure to anime was the stuff like DBZ, Yu yu Hakusho, early One Piece, Yugioh, etc, so you can definitely imagine my confusion and bewilderment. I wouldn't end up finishing the show for the first time until I was literally about to graduate high school. Now it's currently my favorite anime ever, and each time I rewatch it I notice something new. Even after all this time, there's still a bunch that I don't fully understand. Conkersbadfurday Member. Oct 29, 5, Minnesota. Love this anime. My friend runs an Utena podcast called Imagine me and Utena or some garbage like that , that's a fun listen. SolidSnakeBoy Member. May 21, 7, Ikuhara at his most interpretative. While I share djinn s read of the show. I think what I find truly timeless is how much of it is really left to the audience to assign meaning to. The stopwatch, the myriad shadows talking, the black rose arc, etc etc. The show delivers an unmistakable feeling of dread by the end but in a way that is wholey unique to what the reader sees in these characters. I love this show with my main complaint being that it is perhaps 15 episodes too long. So Astral What will you tackle next? Penguindrum and it's tale of a family dealing with a heinous legacy they never asked for? Or perhaps you will explore the meaning of connections and how they shape the duality of love and desire via frogs and anuses in Sarazanmai? They are all range from great to masterpieces, with Sarazanmai being my favorite of his works. Can't go wrong with any of them. Dice Member. Oct 25, 25, Canada. Last edited: Dec 16, Oct 28, 15, Now go watch Penguindrum. Actually what even was the stopwatch? I swear at one point Mickey simply times how long a certain scene lingers with nothing happening. Like sometimes it's a gag and sometimes it's not. It's so bizarre lol. There's so many characters to talk about to. My favorite aside from Queen Nanami was Juri. Her love of that piece of garbage Shiori was both fascinating and frustrating to watch. Like damn girl, Shiori ain't shit. What the fuck do you see in her? But you also can't help but feel bad for her. And yeah guess I'll watch Penguindrum after the movie. Whatever that is. Oct 27, 10, It's a minor masterpiece. The film is a whole other level of crazy. I love it. Oct 27, 9, Oct 8, 16, Shiori is vile. At least Nanami made me laugh. Also it was really touching how she Spoiler: Ending cried at the thought of forgetting Utena. Bumping this because I had to suffer through Funimation's garbage app to watch the movie. Joke's on you, I understood most of it. That was pretty beautiful and easier to follow than I thought. Spoiler What I understood it as was Utena and Anthy escaping to the outside world without anything tying them down, 'escaping to the outside world' meaning being in a relationship unafraid of the judgment they'll receive from most of society. Society being depicted in a post apocalyptic landscape is pretty spot on even today lol. Not sure what the deal was with making Touga a good guy though. Maybe they just wanted to depict his own growth or something. He seems to have changed by the end of the series so maybe this is him if he were to have been that way from the beginning, idk. Also, maybe I looked into it too deeply but I'm pretty sure the escape scene with a phallic-ass Utena car entering and weaving through the castle while a bunch of other cars chase them to try to stop them was a big ol' sex metaphor. Like, sperm? Roubjon Member. Oct 25, 2, So intriguing and amazingly crafted. I immediately recognized why it's so beloved. And 'zettai unmei mokushiroku' is forever engrained into my brain. Aug 9, 2, The thing i like the most about utena is how its unique in almost all media i ever consumed, and its kinda of the ultimate feminist series, not because of them being lesbians or utena dressing as a prince, but because of what they did to akio and, in general, the idea of what being a prince is: Spoiler: General spoilers for whole series The series actually deconstructs it actually does, for once the concept of a prince being needed in the first place, and confronts the ideas of societal holes being propagated through fairy tales, folklore and any type of media that exists since forever in society. Akio as a kid tried to fill a hole that is impossible to fill, and is forced by society to do more than what he wants or is capable of, and that is what corrupts him, the existing rules. He grows up thinking he has the right to dictate what every woman surrounding him has to do and that everything he does is justified, he seduces and disposes of everyone because, in his head, he is the prince and everything he does is justified and for a better end. In his final showdown with utena, he is so far up his own ego and what he has been fed up since birth that he doesnt even hold himself accountable, he blames everything on utena. He says she is the one that commited the sin of having a relationship with a married man, even tho he is the adult and by all accounts should be the responsible one, as is the case with most abusers. He begun being told that he was a prince that should be hold to ridiculous standards, and that by doing that he would own everything and have the right to be happy. Its those ideas that make him grown into a horrible deturped person, like a lot of people we all met at some point in life. That is why imo anthy stabs utena in the last episode. Of course, there is the obvious conclusion that it is because she saw what happened to akio before and does not want that to happen again, but to me its about how she cant be a prince because there shouldnt be a prince in the first place, its a destructive concept that justifies the most inhuman and absurd daily suffering for girls, specially teenagers. Utena is waiting the whole show for a prince that does not exist, and trying to change by become a prince herself is not going to fundamentally change anything, because the whole idea of having a prince rescue you is harmful. If she tries to save anthy by doing that, she will be playing by those hurtful ideas of society, and by playing those rules, she will always be rejected, because society makes it so only boys can be princes. She thinks she can break the chain by becoming a prince herself, but what must be done is to destroy the entire idea of a prince. Its the only way she can finally reach anthy, and its the only way they can both be free and look for happiness. The movie makes this pretty obvious too, at the same time that is WAY heavier on the metaphors. Akio literally says that they only need to be 'living corpses' to stay and be happy, which makes it clear the entire point of the show. But yeah, to me utena is the one rare case where they actually went deeper and said what needed to be said, they didnt just stop at that classic disney 'woman can be strong and fight too!
