Germany-born Kai Merk now represents the Kyrgyz Republic. His brother Kimi features alongside him at international level. Merk reflects on this unusual situation and more with FIFA. In an interview with FIFA. How did that come about and what were the few days around that friendly in Myanmar like for you? Kai Merk: I wanted to apply for Kyrgyz citizenship back in , but the process dragged on for various reasons. I eventually got my passport about a year ago and was then eligible to play for the national team, so they called me up to the squad and I was able to make my debut. Ever since I knew it was possible, I've dreamed of playing for the national side. Luckily it worked out and I prepared well for it. I was in tears when I lined up to face Myanmar — it really was a special moment for me, I was so happy and proud. It was a very emotional and wonderful day. Unfortunately the match itself didn't go so well for me; I picked up an injury and was out of action for a few months. Nonetheless, my dream came true that day. Last November you scored your first international goal away to Malaysia in World Cup qualifying. Your strike gave the Kyrgyz Republic a lead after a nervy hour, but you ultimately lost in stoppage time. How did you feel after that game? It was an action-packed match. To lose after going ahead was hugely disappointing. I was obviously over the moon to score to make it and hoped we could seal the win. Unfortunately that didn't work out, so everyone was down after the match. After winning your second qualifier against Oman , you now face your remaining group opponents Chinese Taipei twice in a row in March. How do you rate your team's chances in the rest of your World Cup qualifying campaign? I think we've got a good chance of taking one of the top two spots, and our two matches in March will be pivotal in that respect. The chance to qualify for the next Asian Games gives us extra motivation. What would reaching the finals with the Kyrgyz Republic mean to you? It would be a huge, incredible achievement. Since October you've been able to count on support from family in the national team, as your younger brother Kimi was recently called up to the squad. How does it feel to have your own brother by your side when singing the national anthem and playing an international match? Being able to experience all of this together is something very special and emotional for both of us, and helps us to keep pushing each other forward. A few months on, it still feels surreal to me that something like this is even possible. We owe it all to our family, who have given everything to help us both make it this far. Your brother is an attacking midfielder, while you tend to play up front. How would you describe your relationship both on and off the pitch? We understand each other incredibly well and have a fantastic relationship — it does us both so much good. Having said that, we've found a good balance now and know how each of us operates. That helps us so much too and makes us feel good. What are your sporting goals for ? As well as your upcoming games for the national side, your club were within striking distance of a European place heading into the winter break…. Qualifying for the World Cup is so important for us in the national team this year. We want to give a good account of ourselves so that we can say we achieved our goals. At club level, I hope we can keep having a say in the league right to the end of the season. I just want to keep playing at a high level, have some fantastic experiences, enjoy my football and keep improving. Share Share.
