In Ecstasy is a multi-screen film by Gareth Hudson that explores moments of transcendence in modern life. Using two large scale projections, the looping video installation positions the viewer between slow motion footage of heavy metal concert-goers and an abstracted soundscape of classical chorus and percussion. This collision of passions is an enquiry into spaces that shape culture and identities. The hypnotic imagery of strangers lost in revelry reveals a portrait of humanity that can be appreciated through multiple spectrums of spirituality; from music — its history, subcultures and socio-political effects — to art and religion. Gareth Hudson is a Newcastle based visual artist and doctoral student. His work explores human spirituality in all of its manifestations, bringing together expansive points of reference from concepts of progress embodied in social, philosophical and scientific developments to the potential of engagement with worlds seen, unseen, and imagined.
