Can't believe they raised the price that much. That is even more than the niseko united 1 day pass. I'll admit though I really enjoyed Rusutsu, but that is probably because there wasn't many people due to covid. I am cm, kg, so I am hoping that's only for their normal skis and not their performance demos. We were in Rusutsu for a week from the 7th to the 13th January. Skied 5 days at Rusutsu using the Epic pass we bought for Nationals at Perisher last year which at least gave it more value than it might otherwise have had for us. We thought Rusutsu would be mobbed with Epic pass holders but we barely queued at all and walked straight onto most lifts all week. I really like Rusutsu as a ski resort, lots of great runs for intermediate to advanced skiers like our family. I should point out though that Niseko copped a heap more snow than Rusutsu in that week so not sure if that is typical. Also two of the gondolas weren't running. One was broken and one I assume because they couldn't be arsed given visitor numbers. Annoying but not the end of the world. We stayed at Pension Clydesdale run by the wonderful Morii and has wife Yoko. It's a 2 minute van drive from the lifts and you called him and he was there in the van within 5 minutes to pick you up every time. As an alternative to shelling out for the Westin or the Resort it's a great option. Breakfast was included and was delicious and expansive! Dinner is optional and we did it once - a 5 course Hokkaido sourced food odyssey which was amazing and great value! Yoko cooks and also bakes all their own bread as well. Other nights we ate at pirateman, Yotei and Tanpopo. All very good. Hot sauce on the spicy chicken meatball skewers at the latter absolutely ruined my insides though. Waitress laughed when I ordered it but it was too late to back out! In retrospect the snow was good although we only had 5cm on two days and other than that no new snow at all. At the time we felt this was presumably a low point of our trip snow-wise but knowing what we now know it may actually have been the high point! The groomers were awesome, grippy and rippable. The off piste was mostly tracked and bumpy but skiable and the park was pretty decent in the context of Japanese parks which we tend to find a bit naff. We had some big snowfalls the first two days and decent the rest, although it did harden up on the 6th with about 10 sec on top. I found the snow great, and there was so much untracked, and on the 3rd there was about 40cm on the piste. The two gondolas were also closed. Not as big as niseko and fall line is short, but more lower angle across the mountain. Some were hiking the bowl next along. We stayed at rusutsu lodges. Eek, those prices are expensive for Japan but the 25 hour ticket is a good option if paying for a pass. Maybe the increase is an impact of the Epic Pass? If the resort isn't getting much or day for an Epic user they will need to make more money from the others. We pick up a car in Chitose on the morning of the 11th. Our ski bag will have been posted there from Yuzawa for days prior. I expect we should be able to get the 5 day Rusutsu passes yes, using the Epic Pass entitlements issued on the 11th to start on the 12th. That would save some time in the morning. There is the option to go night skiing on the 11th if we are inclined and the weather is good for it otherwise we may drive down to Lake Toya in the afternoon for a look, get dinner somewhere there and find a nice outdoor onsen for a soak. People at Rusutsu or who know about it, please come in with up to date tips for us Rusutsu newbies. I've read that the ski gear lockers that are in the big Rusutsu hotels can be used by non-guests. As can the onsen facilities. Bigger Japanese hotels at ski resorts usually have locker rooms and drying rooms for their guests and most accommodations will have a spot for skis, boots and boards, if not lockers. Such gear isn't expected to be taken into the guest rooms. I'd also expect there would be some lockers for boots and street shoes specifically for day trippers. Maybe at the lift ticket office. Reactions: Goski. May 26, 26, 45, 1, It was 7 years ago, but we stayed at Pension Lilla Huset behind and used the paid lockers in the foyer of the hotel on that side the tower I think. We also used the onsens just walked in like we belonged. Reactions: Guthega Girl and Goski. Collect fresh spring water, buy fresh bread and more. We asked about lockers a few weeks ago. We found ski lockers for non-guests down the end of the hotel near the Horn restaurant. There are lockers that would easily take boots. You can just walk into the wave pool and Onsen next to the wave pool - there is no desk stopping non-guests. Bring your own towel. The Onsen at the far end of the hotel is nicer and needs a swipe card. The lockers in the Onsen lock and are free. Reactions: Guthega Girl , Goski and sourmash. My goodness, that sounds more like Australian skiing conditions! We shall see how the lockers fare tomorrow, not super keen lugging stuff back down considering absolutely no racks on the donna bus, skis and boards everywhere flying all over place.
