Burkina Faso Announces Major Investment in Solar Energy to Combat Power Shortages

Ouagadougou, May 2, 2025 – In a bold move to address chronic energy shortages, the government of Burkina Faso has unveiled a $500 million solar power initiative aimed at doubling the country’s electricity capacity by 2030. The project, funded through a partnership with the African Development Bank and several European renewable energy firms, will see the construction of three large-scale solar farms in the regions of Sahel, Centre-Nord, and Hauts-Bassins.

President Ibrahim Traoré hailed the initiative as a 'transformative step toward energy independence.' Burkina Faso, a landlocked West African nation, has long struggled with unreliable electricity access, with only about 50% of urban areas and 20% of rural communities connected to the grid. The new solar farms are expected to provide clean, affordable power to over 2 million people while reducing reliance on costly fuel imports.

'This is not just about lights and power—it’s about empowering businesses, schools, and hospitals,' said Energy Minister Roger Bako. The first phase of construction is set to begin in early 2026, with the goal of adding 250 megawatts of solar capacity within five years.

The announcement comes as Burkina Faso continues to face security challenges from militant groups in the Sahel region. Analysts suggest that improving infrastructure and economic opportunities could help stabilize the country by addressing some root causes of instability.

International observers have praised the plan, with the United Nations describing it as a 'model for sustainable development in the region.' If successful, Burkina Faso could emerge as a leader in West Africa’s renewable energy transition.
