By Gian De Poloni. Topic: Health Policy. Bunbury man Josh Princi said he had 'tried everything but heroin' and it was only the birth of his son Blaze that shook him out of his addiction. Methamphetamine abuse in the South West has been described as an epidemic, amid calls for convicted drug offenders to be sent to rehabilitation centres instead of jail. A community meeting in Bunbury on Tuesday night attracted a wide spectrum of people, including self-confessed users, recovering addicts and stressed-out families desperately seeking guidance on how to help their loved ones. Single father and recovering addict Josh Princi, 31, opened up to a crowd of about 40 people about his battle with drug addiction, which began when he started smoking marijuana at age Fifteen years later, he still finds it challenging at times to resist the temptation. I was never peer pressured, but I just wanted to be part of the group and see what it was all about. Mr Princi served three and a half years in jail after being convicted of selling ice, but went back straight back into the drug trade when he got out. Mr Princi feels if he had been granted parole, he would have had structures in place to help him, such as being required to find a job and subjected to random urine analysis. Mr Princi stayed trapped in a vicious cycle of relapse that stopped only when his ex-partner gave birth to their son Blaze. Mr Princi has now been accepted into the Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade and is studying a diploma in drugs, alcohol and mental health. Bunbury mother-of-four Suzanne Ytting said her daughter struggled with being a meth user and having a serious mental illness, borderline personality disorder. Ms Ytting said her family was at a loss to overcome the problem. The family does not enjoy festive occasions such as Christmas, Easter or birthdays, she said. She said people in various echelons of society identify as methamphetamine users, including doctors, nurses, lawyers and judges. We have young, old and professionals that are using. Ms Davies said a residential rehabilitation centre was desperately needed in the Greater Bunbury area so those convicted of meth offences could serve their time there, rather than in jail. The State Government had flagged a trial of that policy statewide , but Ms Davies said more facilities were required to reduce the waiting list to book into one of WA's few rehab centres. Now, we're looking at up to 12 weeks to three months at the most,' she said. Ms Davies said families puzzled about how to help their loved ones may need to be counselled themselves. They need some guidance,' she said. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work.
