Brad Marchand Named Captain of the Boston Bruins

Boston, MA – September 20, 2023 – The Boston Bruins have officially announced Brad Marchand as the team’s new captain, succeeding Patrice Bergeron, who retired after an illustrious 19-year career with the franchise.

Marchand, 35, has been a cornerstone of the Bruins for over a decade, known for his relentless playing style, offensive prowess, and leadership both on and off the ice. The veteran winger has spent his entire NHL career in Boston since being drafted in the third round (71st overall) in 2006.

'It’s an incredible honor to be named captain of the Boston Bruins,' Marchand said in a press conference at TD Garden. 'This organization means everything to me, and I’ll do everything I can to lead this team with the same passion and dedication that Bergeron and the captains before him showed.'

Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery praised Marchand’s growth as a leader. 'Brad has matured into one of the most respected voices in our locker room. He plays with heart every night, and his experience and competitiveness make him the perfect choice to wear the ‘C’.'

Marchand’s resume includes a Stanley Cup championship (2011), multiple All-Star appearances, and over 900 career points. Despite past controversies early in his career, he has evolved into a mentor for younger players while maintaining his trademark edge on the ice.

Fans and teammates alike have rallied behind the decision, with defenseman Charlie McAvoy stating, 'Brad’s the kind of guy you want leading your team. He sets the tone every game, and we’re all behind him.'

The Bruins will begin their 2023-24 season next month, with Marchand leading a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talent as they aim for another deep playoff run.
