Mike Johnson had been a mail carrier in the small town of Cedar Falls for over twenty years. Rain or shine, he delivered letters, packages, and the occasional odd shipment with a smile and a friendly wave. Everyone knew Mike—the kids on their bikes, the old men on their porches, even Mrs. Henderson’s grumpy tabby cat, who would hiss at everyone but him.

But one chilly November morning, Mike noticed something strange in his mailbag. Among the usual bills and catalogs was a small, faded package with no return address, only his name written in elegant, looping script: Michael Johnson.

Mike frowned. He never got mail on his route—that wasn’t how it worked. Curious, he opened it right there on the sidewalk. Inside was an old pocket watch, its brass surface worn but still gleaming. When he flipped it open, the hands weren’t moving. Instead, etched inside the lid were the words: Time’s up when you stop.

Mike chuckled. Some kind of prank, maybe from the high school kids. He slipped the watch into his pocket and finished his route.

That night, as he wound down with his usual cup of coffee, Mike noticed something odd. The watch in his pocket was warm—too warm. He pulled it out and nearly dropped it. The hands were moving now, ticking backward.

Before he could make sense of it, his phone rang. It was his supervisor, sounding frantic. 'Mike, where are you? You missed half your route today!'

Mike frowned. 'No, I didn’t. I delivered everything.'

But when he stepped outside, the sun was high in the sky—morning, not evening. The date on his phone was yesterday’s.

The watch was rewinding time.

At first, Mike thought it was amazing. He fixed small mistakes—returning a lost wallet before it was stolen, warning a neighbor about icy steps before they fell. But soon, he noticed the cost. Every time he used the watch, he aged. A few gray hairs became streaks of silver; his joints ached like he’d worked decades, not days.

Then came the final delivery. A letter addressed to him, in the same elegant script: You’ve been a faithful servant. One last stop.

Mike knew then—this was no gift. It was a test.

With shaking hands, he set the watch on his kitchen table and walked away. The next morning, it was gone. And when he stepped onto his porch, there was only the usual mail, the usual route, and the usual life he’d always loved.

Mike Johnson smiled. Some deliveries were better left unmade.
