Boston Protest Demands Climate Action as Thousands March Through Downtown

Boston, MA – October 12, 2024 – Thousands of activists, students, and concerned citizens flooded the streets of downtown Boston on Saturday in a massive protest demanding urgent government action on climate change. Organized by a coalition of environmental groups, including Sunrise Movement Boston and Extinction Rebellion NE, the demonstration called for an immediate end to fossil fuel subsidies and a faster transition to renewable energy.

Protesters gathered at Boston Common before marching to the Massachusetts State House, where speakers highlighted the increasing threats of extreme weather, rising sea levels, and environmental injustice. Chants of 'No more oil, no more gas, keep your promises or face the mass!' echoed through the city as participants held signs reading 'Planet Over Profit' and 'Our Future is Not Negotiable.'

Local leaders, including City Councilor Julia Mejia, joined the rally, pledging support for stronger climate policies. 'Boston must lead the way in the fight against climate disaster,' Mejia declared. 'We cannot wait while corporations and politicians delay real action.'

The protest remained peaceful, though a small group staged a sit-in outside a major bank accused of funding fossil fuel projects, leading to several arrests. Police reported no major incidents, praising organizers for their cooperation.

The demonstration comes as Massachusetts faces pressure to meet its 2050 net-zero emissions goal, with activists arguing current policies fall short. Similar protests erupted nationwide this weekend, signaling growing public frustration over climate inaction.

'We’re here because we have no choice,' said Maya Chen, 21, a Boston University student. 'If leaders won’t act, the people will make them listen.'
