Unexpected Message at LDS General Conference

The Unexpected Talk

Elder Jacob Thompson had been preparing for months to give his first talk at General Conference. As a newly called Seventy, he felt both honored and overwhelmed by the responsibility. He had written, rewritten, and practiced his message on faith and perseverance countless times. But as he sat in the Conference Center, waiting for his turn at the pulpit, he realized something terrifying—he had left his notes in his hotel room.

His heart pounded as the session president announced, 'We will now hear from Elder Thompson.' With no time to retrieve his notes, he took a deep breath, said a silent prayer, and stepped up to the microphone.

As he looked out at the sea of faces, an unexpected calm washed over him. Instead of reciting his prepared talk, he began to speak from the heart. He shared a story from his mission—one he hadn’t planned to tell—about a struggling family in Brazil who had found hope through the simple act of prayer. Tears filled his eyes as he testified of God’s love for each of His children.

The Spirit filled the room, touching hearts in a way no rehearsed talk could. After the session, messages poured in from members around the world, thanking him for the message they needed to hear.
