Blue Origin Successfully Launches NS-25 Mission, Carrying Six Passengers to the Edge of Space

Van Horn, Texas – May 19, 2024 – Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, successfully launched its New Shepard rocket today, marking its seventh human spaceflight mission, NS-25. The reusable suborbital vehicle carried six passengers to the edge of space, offering them a breathtaking view of Earth and a few minutes of weightlessness.

The mission lifted off at 9:35 a.m. CDT from Blue Origin’s launch site in West Texas. After a smooth ascent, the crew capsule separated from the booster and reached an apogee of approximately 66 miles (106 kilometers)—crossing the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. The passengers experienced about three minutes of weightlessness before the capsule descended under parachutes, landing safely in the Texas desert.

Meet the Crew

The NS-25 flight included a diverse group of passengers:

Mason Angel – Entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

Kenneth L. Hess – Software engineer and space enthusiast.

Carol Schaller – Retired CPA and adventurer.

Gopi Thotakura – Pilot and aviation businessman, the first Indian space tourist on New Shepard.

Ed Dwight – A former U.S. Air Force captain and America’s first Black astronaut candidate in the 1960s, finally reaching space at 90 years old.

Another yet-to-be-named passenger – Completing the six-person crew.

A Triumphant Return to Flight

This mission marked Blue Origin’s return to crewed flights after a nearly two-year hiatus following a September 2022 uncrewed launch failure. The company implemented corrective measures, and today’s successful launch reaffirms the reliability of the New Shepard system.

The Future of Blue Origin

Blue Origin continues to expand its space tourism business while developing its heavy-lift New Glenn rocket and lunar lander for NASA’s Artemis program. With today’s success, the company reinforces its position in the commercial space industry, competing with SpaceX and Virgin Galactic.
