A man who raped a child has collapsed in pain after being savagely whipped in front of a crowd of people in Aceh, Indonesia.
A child rapist collapsed and begged for mercy after he was flogged 146 times with a cane during a public whipping.
Pictures show a masked member of the religious police mete out the punishment to the 19-year-old sex attacker in Aceh, Indonesia.
During the whipping, the man pleaded for the punishment to stop and was briefly treated by a medic before the flogging restarted, the Mail Online reported.
The teenager was arrested earlier this year on charges of molesting and raping a minor.
The paedophile was sentenced to 146 lashes, a serious punishment reserved for the most heinous of criminals.
Ivan Nanhhar Alavi, an official from the East Aceh prosecutor’s office, told reporters that “the maximum sentence is meant to be a deterrent.”
The punishment is dolled out as part of a version of Islamic religious law - known as Sharia - enforced in Aceh.
In September another man collapsed after receiving 52 lashes as punishment for raping a child.
The man, known only as Roni, was set to be caned 169 times but prosecutors postponed his punishment deeming him unfit to continue.
Following his collapse, he was immediately taken to a medical centre for treatment.
“When he was lashed 52 times, he was found on his right back there were heavy blisters, if he continued and was hit by the same beating, the blood vessels could burst and bleed,” one of the doctors said.
“It is better if we postpone it until the recovery is good and the convict can be punished again.”
The doctor added: “At the initial examination, the convict was fine, but maybe a little frightened so that several times the convict raised his hand to stop.
“But when he was examined his health the last time it was true that the wound was quite heavy.”
Five others were also flogged for gambling offences, with two men receiving eight and three others receiving six lashes.
Aceh is the only region in Indonesia that imposes Sharia, with 98 per cent of its five million residents being Muslim.
It adopted the Islamic law after being granted a degree of autonomy from the national government in 2001.
The region moved to a full implementation of traditional Islamic law in 2006, and it even covers non-Muslims in the area.
The corporal punishment can be taken in place of jail time, or be used alongside it for more serious crimes.
Human rights groups have condemned the brutal punishments as inhumane, but they have wide support in Aceh.
Sharia officials confirmed earlier this year the whipping would go on despite the pandemic, which has infected at least 262,022 and killed 10,105 in Indonesia.
Amnesty International has condemned the practice, saying last year that the canings are violations of human rights law.
The group said: “Punishable offences include consensual intimacy or sexual activity for unmarried couples, consensual sex outside marriage, same-sex sexual relations, the consumption and sale of alcohol, and gambling.
“Under international human rights law all forms of corporal punishment are prohibited – they violate the absolute prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment and often torture.”

There is something thrillingly disturbing about the masochistic ideas people come up with, intentionally trying to cause physical pain to themselves and mental anguish to those watching.

Almost everyone participates in some form of masochism, whether its wearing super high heels and extremely uncomfortable clothes for the sake of fashion, or getting piercings and tattoos in order to make a beautiful statement. Torturous photography is often used in advertising campaigns in order to draw attention to a cause or idea because people can't help but stare at, and then hold onto those kinds of visuals.

With everything from fashion choices, advertisements, self-mutilation and expressive photography, intentional depictions of pain and suffering are consistently prevalent throughout. The strange and bizarre masochistic tenancies of the human race are really intriguing to document.

What happens? A few young boys take up some rods, smoothen them (I guess so they don’t break), and then whip across the arms or the back of women, preferably in such a way that the skin breaks, leaving a bloody streak that will turn into a scar. It’s referred to as “culture” (here Banna, and likewise Hamer ), and leaves the woman proud. Maybe for her capacity of endurance (as if they didn’t show it every day), her sacrifice for “culture”, and so on. After careful consideration I still see in it a way of making women obedient, and training young boys in the “art” of domestic violence, or so. Explain it in whichever way you like, since the ritual has no male equivalent (just as female genital mutilation has no real male equivalent) I find it not acceptable.
Now, who am I to judge? That’s a big one, after all, they are adults, and as I do not understand the first thing of their language, I have obviously no real understanding of their culture from within. But do I even need that? Can’t I just go with what I see? One of the women, the one with most scars on her back, and also the one who walked around the proudest of them all, asked me to whip her. I refused, and she will have to live with my rejection.
I got more concerned with my role being there as a “tourist observer”, or the other tourists (real tourists, not travelers). Some of them felt entitled to squeeze themselves into every step of what is an important initiation ritual for a boy and his family, one which consists of numerous steps, of which those advertised to tourists – bull jumping and the whipping – are just two parts. Many of the tourists needed close-ups of the whipping, and here I cannot follow. All in all, and whether you call it by that ominous word “culture” or not, someone may be proud of his yacht and heli and car fleet, for which he exploited his employees, someone may be proud of his trophy lion’s head or tusks or trophy woman, or someone may be proud of his/her scars. None of it is healthy. True, life in this region is rough, and it may be useful to toughen up so you can help the clan to survive. Perhaps the tribal scars are part of that, and skin modifications are essential part of various cultures in the region and elsewhere in Africa and the world as a whole. The Mursi , for instance, are famous for what they do their lips and skin.
Heilo with her tribal (Hamer) scars
But then again, the same would be true for the boys, but there is no whipping for them. That’s my issue. In the pics you see women dancing and getting excited in expectation of their whipping, you may see some old scars, you see some rather innocent looking boys being instructed about the whipping and its function (or so I assume), and some tourists getting close-ups of the action. I have no pics of the actual whipping. The whole thing left me loads of questions about the role of me as a traveller, my involvement and observer role, and so on. Tonight, I have an invitation to woman’s/girl’s circumcision party. Nope, count me out. That’s an easy one, but other choices and judgments are less easy, or I don’t want them to be too easy. But as far as I am concerned, “culture” is no argument, it’s a choice. Which is easy in the culture(s) that I come from.
This looks rather harmless, and it may be just a warming up. At any rate, the backs of many women are a mess of bloody scars, of which I have no pics or vids for what I believe obvious reasons.
BTW The connections between women and cattle (dowry paid in cattle, cow grease or milk in hair, cow skin as clothes, the same whips used on cows and women) is striking.
