I get asked a lot about linears, and something that's been coming up recently time and time again is whether or not vintage are still worth chasing after the advent of retooled cherry switches. I'm going to do more of a write up soon but - I rebuilt these two today as test candidates. And I'll kick off with sound:
I'm not going to go into my preference at this point, but which do you prefer the sound of?
A note on the builds, the retooled have been broken in for a period of around a week and a half, and the vintage have been cleaned and cherry picked. Both are using Sprit 63.5g springs and have been lubed identically. Both are using ABS DSA double-shots, and both have GMK stabs, they're also both PCB mount - I wanted to test them at their best rather than stock.
This is super useful! It sounds to me that the vints have a deeper and bassier sound compared to the retooled. By the way, which lube did you use?
Where did you get your retooled blacks? I’d like to get some, but all the stores that list the mx blacks as retooled seem to be sold out.
how's the smoothness of the retooled blacks after lubing in comparison with vintage blacks?
Great, but not quite the same (these vintage are from a couple of 89 boards, very well used), I think the retooled will get there though. Just need a decade. There isn't much in it to be frank.

"At first glance, BLK MKT Vintage is simply a purveyor of Black Americana—an 'archival designator' in the antiques industry that Handy and Stewart define for themselves as 'material culture pertaining to the histories, tradition, or folklore of the United States, centering the narratives of black people throughout the diaspora'." - Conde Nast Traveler

The Black Series or The Vintage Collection
/r/starwarscollecting is home to Star Wars collecting news, toys, merchandise, discussion, pics, etc.
I've recently come to a crossroads in my collecting and am looking for your thoughts an opinions. I have a very large TBS collection and really enjoy them, however the prices are going up and I cant seem to justify spend $25-$30 for one figure (shipping included of course, because we know finding them in the wild can be very challenging). I have a lot of the older 3.75 inch characters and am thinking of collecting TVC for price and display space reasons. Those of you who collect TVC do you think the price of the figure is worth it compared to the price of TBS? Is the articulation & bang for your buck better or close to TBS? Any thoughts an opinions are welcomed!
I collect only 3.75 scale. It's what I have always collected and there are alot of great figures. My only complaint is that there are alot of figures that are not in my scale. How I would love a line of jedi fallen order figures! But alas its not in the cards for now.
I collect both and I personally prefer TVC slightly more than BS. Some TVC figures have great articulation but some TVC figures have not so great articulation.
I think for the price (retail being around $12.99), TVC is much better to collect since it’s a bit cheaper.
Thank you for the response. $12.99 does sound a lot more reasonable. Plus I'm seeing there are a ton of figures you can get as they have been making the 3.75 line for ALONG time.
with australian price i have to pay $45 for 1 BS figure and $29 for 1 TVC figure
I was doing both up until the Gonk-K2 wave. Just found myself collecting TVC out of habit/obligation instead of enjoying it, so I stopped. I’ve seen newer waves in store and just haven’t felt excited, but that’s just me.
Honestly both lines are amazing, and some new TVC announcements have been tempting, but I hope whatever you choose brings you joy as a collector since that’s what really matters most in this hobby. For all I know, I could resume TVC, but only if I feel really excited about it.
Ive started collecting more tvs than tbs recently bc of how out of touch hasbro is with star wars, Also with tvs, you can army build alot cheaper and easier as it takes up less space.
I'm going with TVC. I decided to stop with TBS with a few exceptions for budget reasons and so I don't have to put up with horribly distributed exclusives every other month. Plus 3.75' has vehicles and better character variety.
TVC (and the 3.75” scale) has a rich history, and represents tons of characters, creatures, ships, locations, etc. But it is largely neglected these days.
TBS has better detail and articulation, and gets more love from Hasbro these days. I think it’s the way of the future, if you’re just starting to collect.
I prefer TVC for price and space reasons, as well as the depth of the line. The newest TVC figures (sculpts from 2016 onwards) are just as well sculpted and almost as well articulated as TBS, but a lot of TVC figures reuse parts from older releases, which aren't quite as impressive.
I prefer TBS. The detail is pretty great right now, and I think it’s way ahead of TVC. Most of the figs are still $20, and you can save on shipping by ordering two of a fig then returning the second one. It’s not a huge price increase from TVC, and they’re a good amount bigger.
