"I am beyond disgusted and disappointed."
Liam Payne just released his first record since his One Direction days, and it's already being called out by queer fans and LGBTQ+ Twitter. The album, 'LP1', features a song called 'Both Ways' which has got bisexual fans fuming, with one tweeting that they are "beyond disgusted and disappointed."
'Both Ways' appears to be a nod to the grim saying "they swing both ways" which references a super outdated and binary understanding of bisexuality . But it's not just the track title that's being called out.
The lyrics appear to fetishise a bisexual female partner of his...
Bisexual women and femme-presenting people are so often subjected to this kind of fetishisation - the idea that their sexuality exists to arouse straight, cis dudes. It's a misconception that contributes to bisexual erasure (when bisexual people's sexuality is repeatedly ignored, denied existence or just plain questioned).
Fans are also saying his lyrics are playing on the oldest bisexual stereotype in the book - that bisexual people are hypersexual and bang into threesomes :
The whole "bisexuals love threesomes" thing is one of most prevalent misconceptions about bisexuality. It plays into the stereotype that bisexual people have more sex, are more promiscuous, and sexually greedy. It's biphobia, basically.
fuck liam payne, fuck both ways, and fuck guys who are obsessed with bi sexual girls only for the sexual part
As numerous reports have found , bisexual people are more at risk of sexual violence and mental health issues than gay and lesbian folk. Bisexual erasure, misconceptions about the identity and stereotypes about bisexuals' promiscuity all feed into this.
Saliwho wrote, "The fetishising of bi women you promote means we’re at by far the highest risk of sexual violence compared to straight or gay people. Nearly HALF of us have been raped. Many, including me, by people forcing us into threesomes."
Hi @LiamPayne . I’m reading your Both Ways lyrics. The fetishising of bi women you promote means we’re at by far the highest risk of sexual violence compared to straight or gay people. Nearly HALF of us have been raped. Many, including me, by people forcing us into threesomes. pic.twitter.com/qQMNqtT3hB
Twitter user alysscorpio explained how hurtful the lyrics are to her: "as a bisexual woman, it was extremely uncomfortable reading the lyrics to ‘both ways’ by liam payne. he openly fetishizes the fact that a woman likes boys and girls, and he even mentions bi women in threesomes which furthers the stereotype that all bi ppl are only into that."

In response to those calling 'Both Ways' a "bisexual anthem", user truantswave said, "both ways by liam payne is NOT a bisexual anthem. the lyrics fucking fetishize bisexual women. we aren’t bisexual because we want to fulfill men’s threesome fantasies. i am beyond disgusted and disappointed."
tw: biphobia, misogyny both ways by liam payne is NOT a bisexual anthem. the lyrics fucking fetishize bisexual women. we aren’t bisexual because we want to fulfill men’s threesome fantasies. i am beyond disgusted and disappointed.
Another Twitter user, sheilaisidik pointed out how different Liam's approach to LGBTQ+ topics was to former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles'- "sorry not sorry i’m still disgusted by both ways by liam payne. i still cant believe and sang and released it. it’s absolutely disgusting. imagine idolizing someone for YEARS and then them FETISHIZING your sexuality. harry could and would NEVER."

Harry, on the other hand, has been praised for his authentically queer-inclusive lyrics in songs like 'Medicine' and his bisexual anthem 'Lights Up' .
LGBTQ+ fans also pointed out there seems to be a nod to bisexuality in the 'Fine Line' album artwork .
Maybe Liam could learn a thing or two from HS?!

Just curious, especially since there's nothing explicitly bisexual about the lyrics
I think because this song about love. And it’s all. I mean nobody repeats vulgar phrases like «Babe, Girl, Boy etc.» It’s song just about simple HUMAN love, cold and sweater. No tragedy and drama
That actually sounds like a good reason to consider it a bi song, because anyone can sing it to anyone of any gender and not have to worry about pronouns and stuff Edit: I just listened to the song all the way through and stand corrected, there's mention of gender at the start of the song (everything else is genderless tho)
i’m sorry being called babe is vulgar 🤨 this dude
Okay so I’m new to the bi internet community (beyond shook when I learnt that jean cuffs and not sitting right were a bi thing I’d been doing without realising! ...lemon bars on the other hand, hadn’t heard of them!).
Genuinely interested though, is this song a bi-anthem? We’re considering it for the first dance at our wedding next year and I’d love it even more if it ended up being a quiet nod to my sexuality!
I think we just claimed it as i havent noticed any lyrics that would point to it being about bisexuality, although this might be me being blind. Also congratulations on getting married!!!
you’re not a sexuality if you sit a certain way smfh
I'm not entirely sure. I mean like. My heart and soul tells me it's clearly a bit anthem but then my brain is like "nah that's whack" but also I love the song so.
Honestly, I think it's something we just claimed
Have you ever met a bi person who doesnt wear sweaters 24-7? Not me
I dont. I'm usually in a t shirt, in a tank top, in a hoodie, 3/4 sleeve or in a croptop. I'm not a fan of long sleeves unless they are a bit too big for me.
well i wear a t-shirt, shorts and crocs and a scarf all the dam time
Another really good song is "Make me feel" by Janelle monáe! Watch the music video😁👍
it’s just more bullshit the internet came up with. just because u listen to it doesn’t make you bi and vice versa. it makes me so mad that people say that is a bi song because it’s actually a really good song 🙄
I might not get what your saying, but are you saying it can’t be a good song if it’s considered bisexual? I can’t really get what this means.
First of all, the main reason (from what I've gathered) is that it's generally genderless and about love in general. Secondly, what about it being considered Bisexual makes it bad?
the line "one love two mouths" can also be a reference to the fact that bi people have one love but can be with 2 or more genders. also the aesthetic was popular on tumblr and a majority of the ppl that used tumblr are a part of the lgbtq+ community :)
its because some bi -sexuals listened to it when they where kids but didn't realize till later they were bi till later. Its just a joke that most of us listened to it or still do.
