This is one of my favorite books on child discipline. Even if you choose not to spank, it has sound principles for how to act toward your child while administering discipline. For instance, saying something clearly only once, and if not obeyed, then administering your discipline calmly, in a loving way, not in anger. It’s full of wisdom. Highly recommended.

I thought this was a very good reminder! Thank you! It’s soo important to remember that Gods ways are higher than our own ways. Spank in faith now that you will reap benefits later. Realize Satan is at war against scripture and your family and lean on the Lord and His understanding. I feel like this book took an hour to read and will give you 100 x more benefits than 10 hours of the latest psychological parenting book written by psychologists with poorly behaved children!

Don't criticize this book without reading it simply because it deals with the controversial subject of spanking! It is well written, simple to understand, and easy to prayerfully apply. I challenge you to READ it! I read this book in the early '70's, applied the loving, biblical principles, and raised 3 awesome children who are now 3 happy, well-adjusted, productive adults. They have blessed me with 8 precious grandchildren! I have, personally, purchased and given away at least 20 copies throughout the years!

This is a great book that shows you how to lovingly correct your children. It is great for new and seasoned parents alike.

Completely biblically based discipline guide for a well balanced and loving approach to time tested child training. Raised my four using these scriptural methods and they are peaceful grown-ups now.

Excellent book! Folks tend to swing toward extremes with child discipline, either physical abuse or no discipline whatsoever, which is also a form of child abuse, though much less publicized. Lessin hits the nail on the head, helping folks to understand what Godly, loving, firm, yet compassionate discipline looks like.

Roy Lessin: You are one sick man!! God would not want you to spank your child in the way you teach it. God's way is in kind loving manner that creates an environment of learning and love! Do you really think God spanked Jesus? I read a letter from a child that was raised by parents of your church, she is damaged and your wife spanked her too in the same manner you instructed her parents. You are not teaching God's way and should be seen by a doctor for mental instability.

This is an excellent, efficient guide to Biblical child disciplining. Easy to read, hard to implement (because society has misspoken on the matter for so long), but eternally rewarding if you follow through.

Great book for parents with a spanking fetish and child sadists

Don't waste your money on this piece of crap (really, it's only a long brochure anyway and as such, should cost no more than about $1.19). It has no validity of any kind and is just the personal opinion of this man - who is a pretty disturbed individual in my opinion. If you are going to waste your time and money on this disturbing stuff, I would recommend balancing it with the perspective of one of the life-long victims of this "approach" (an approach that is nothing more than a rationalization for violent parenting and sadistic psycho-sexual abuse). One such valuable counter-opinion comes from Beth Fenimore (whose father was the book's illustrator and a big fan of Lessin's apparently). Her story, which describes some of the scars she has had to endure all of her life because of this book can be found in "an open letter to Ray Lessin" at [...] There are many others available online. So - all in all - not much of a read (unless you are into sadistic child porn in which case it might rev you up a little). It has no reference points - other than the usual Biblical nonsense that is so often used to justify brutality ("spare the rod" crap). Here is an example of the primitive level of logic that Lessin professes: "If a parent asks a child to clean his room and the child goes about his task with a long face and a complaint on his lips, this is not joyful obedience. If a child is told that it's time for bed and the child goes to his room pouting, this is not joyful obedience. These wrong attitudes need the loving correction of a spanking. A child who fusses or whines is manifesting an attitude of ungratefulness or complaint, and this needs correction." (Correction, by the way, as Lessin explains it means beating your child with a stick (a weapon, as defined by the law) until the child's spirit has been broken as made evident by the nature of the depth of their crying). He also suggests gems of wisdom such as: "Swats or slaps are not spankings. They only create anger or resentment in children and will not bring them to a place of repentance. A spanking needs to be hard enough and long enough to bring a repentant cry, a cry that says, "I'm sorry." A parent will be able to discern in a child's cry when he or she has broken and come to repentance over an issue. A repentant cry is different from a cry of anger or protest, which usually occurs at the beginning of a spanking. It is not a "fakey" cry which children sometimes give to get out of a thorough spanking; children will even scream when a parent starts a spanking." Written at about a grade 8 level of reading comprehension - which is appropriate, given that the mentality of anyone who would want this crap would probably not have gone beyond about that level of intellectual maturity. The simplicity of style is matched by the simplistic thinking that drives the logic in this call for more violence against children (and against the "evil" that lives in them when they are not being "joyfully obedient"). In all, it can be read in one short sitting (under an hour) and comes across more as a manifesto of the Waco Texas/Branch Divinian variety - but might appeal to people who enjoy the thought (or reality) of beating a child (recommended, Lessin says, to begin with infants by about the age of one as explained in the book as follows: "By the time most children reach the age of one year, they have begun to crawl or walk. Once this mobility begins, parents will need to set down specific guidelines for the child. A child who is actually moving about the house is able to understand the meaning of the words "no" or "don't touch" or other simple directives that express a parent's will. Willful disobedience at this stage will be very easy to detect. For example, a child who is told "come here" by a parent but turns instead and goes in the opposite direction or stubbornly refuses to budge is willfully disobeying. A spanking is in order." If you love your children and are wanting to read something that will help give you effective discipline skills, get to know the name of this book and of this author. Then, every time you see it anywhere in print, RUN. You'll do better to pray for God's forgiveness of this idiot than give him money through buying his book to validate his warped morality. A good lawyer might consider reading it as a starting placer to see if a class-action suit might be viable for Lessin's victims.

For all Christian parents who wonder how to discipline their young children, Roy Lessin clearly explains the biblical mandate to "train children in the way they should go" and how spanking is one part of that mandate. Lessin teaches parents when and how to spank in a way that helps children learn to obey. Just as important, he teaches when not to spank, including a straightforward, helpful distinction between loving discipline and child abuse.
Practical and easy-to-follow instruction, including answers to frequently asked questions about spanking, makes this an excellent resource for parents who desire to raise their children in God's way.
Roy Lessin has dedicated his life to ministry. For more than 50 years, he has been studying and teaching others what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit. His words have ministered to countless people over the years in a variety of personal and professional venues, most notably DaySpring Cards.
In 1971, Roy, along with three other Christian men, started a Christian publishing company. After its first year in business, the company created a Christmas card with this message: "When you get right down to it, the only thing that really matters is Jesus." That card was the beginning of DaySpring Cards--a global leader in Christian cards, gifts, and inspirational products, and a subsidiary of the world's largest greeting card company, Hallmark. Roy spent many years at DaySpring in various creative and editorial roles bringing hope and encouragement to the body of Christ. He continues to be involved there, serving in various pastoral roles, consulting, and helping to create new products.
Today, Roy is an active Bible teacher and serves on the Advisory Board of Art Set Apart, a creative disciplemaking ministry. They recently worked together to put his lifelong studies and teaching into a book called "The Holy Spirit Book: Discovering the Person, the Purpose, and the Power of the Promised Holy Spirit." This book uses a combination of Scriptures and real life stories to help others understand what the Bible says about who the Holy Spirit is, why He came, and how to receive His power.
