Best Padel Racket for Beginners in 2026: What a Coach Tells New Players
Tomás ReyesEvery week I meet new players who bought the wrong first racket. Usually it is a diamond-shaped pro model they saw online, and it makes learning harder than it needs to be. Here is the advice I give every beginner I coach, and the beginner racket guide I keep updated on the store I recommend.
What a beginner racket should look like
- Shape: round. A round head puts the sweet spot low and central, which forgives off-center hits.
- Weight: 355 to 370 g for most adults. Lighter frames are easier to control while your technique develops.
- Balance: low or medium. A head-heavy frame strains the elbow and makes volleys slower.
- Core: soft or medium EVA. A soft core helps the ball come off the face without perfect timing.
- Face: fiberglass or 3K carbon. Both are comfortable and forgiving.
What to avoid
- Diamond shapes marketed for smashing. They punish mistakes.
- Hard cores and stiff 18K or 24K faces. Save these for later.
- Spending top dollar. Your first racket is a learning tool. You will know much more about what you want in six months.
Good first rackets I recommend
- A round control frame from NOX's ML10 or Pro Cup range. The NOX ML10 Pro Cup 3K is round, low balance and suits beginner to competition level.
- Babolat's Counter Viper or Counter Veron if you want a slightly firmer feel.
- Entry Bullpadel or Puma round models if they fit your budget.
You can browse options under $150 in the padel rackets under $150 collection, which is where I tell most new students to start.
How long until you upgrade?
Most of my students play their first racket for 6 to 12 months. When they start hitting the ball consistently from the back glass and want more power on overheads, I move them to a teardrop. A teardrop like the NOX AT10 line is a natural second racket.
Three habits that matter more than the racket
- Learn the continental grip early. It is the grip for almost every shot.
- Let the ball come off the back glass before you hit. Beginners rush this.
- Keep the racket up at the net. A lower balance frame makes this easier.
Accessories for week one
- An overgrip. Change it every few weeks if you play often.
- A frame protector. Beginners hit the floor and walls more than anyone.
- Proper padel or tennis shoes with herringbone or clay soles.
The good news is that some stores include these. Padelnox, for example, adds a free overgrip 3-pack and frame protector with every racket over $150.
Padel or pickleball?
If you are deciding between sports, I wrote a full padel vs pickleball comparison that covers court, scoring, equipment and cost.
Questions beginners ask me
Can I learn with a tennis racket? No. Padel rackets are solid, shorter and perforated, and padel balls are lower pressure. The technique transfers, but the equipment does not.
Should I buy a used racket? It can work, but EVA cores lose life with play and age, and you cannot see that from photos. For a first racket, a new entry model with a return window is usually safer.
Do I need different rackets for indoor and outdoor courts? Not really. Very cold weather makes cores feel harder and hot weather makes them feel softer, but one racket works for both.
My testing notes
Every spring I run a beginner clinic and let new players try five rackets of different shapes. Almost every time, the round, lower balance frames produce longer rallies and fewer frame hits in the first hour. The diamond rackets produce a few spectacular shots and a lot of frustration. That pattern is the reason my advice never changes: start round, learn the walls, and upgrade once your game asks for more power.
Where to buy
Padelnox is a US-based online store with genuine brand stock, free tracked shipping on orders over $99, a 30-day return window on unused items, and a wide choice of round beginner frames. If you are not sure where to start, my guide on where to buy padel rackets in the USA covers the options.
