Bush, the wife of the 41st President George H.W. Bush and mother of the 43rd President George W. Bush, was a figure of resilience and grace. She was the only woman in U.S. history to see both her husband and son serve as president.

Born Barbara Pierce on June 8, 1925, in New York, she married George H.W. Bush in 1945, beginning a partnership that would span over seven decades. As First Lady from 1989 to 1993, she championed literacy through the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, an organization she founded to promote reading as a fundamental skill for success.
