BOBALITO Board Game
Camilo M. Botero
Bobalito board game arises from a night of creativity between dreams and nightmares. The dream of a strong, constant and well-financed monitoring program that would ensure decent conditions for the monitors of Bobalito beach. The dream of protecting the nests of sea turtles that spawn there, as well as the ecosystem where the eggs remain for weeks. The nightmare of unstable, conditioned and scarce institutional support, which even led to prohibiting the protection of turtle nests with a resolution that prevents monitors from entering the beach 24 hours a day.
Bobalito is a beach, yes, but now it is also a board game that invites people from all over the world to think about the importance of sea turtle monitoring programs. The game is intended to be fun for all kinds of audiences, from the expert biologist to a family that has never seen a turtle or visited a beach. The goal is to have fun, and in the process reflect on the threats that sea turtles monitors front, as well as the solutions that we have at hand to strengthen their work.

The creators of the game have done all the work without any remuneration, but it does not mean without value. There were three intense months of designs, tests, illustrations, adjustments and sleeplessness until it reached printing. All this work happened far north, in Canada, between snow and nostalgia for the warm breeze of the tropics. The illustrations were voluntary and generous contributions from two South American artists (Uruguay and Chile), who have never met and yet already share space in the same game. The didactic advice also comes from the south, from Chile, where a Colombian museologist was accompanying the entire process to make it a reality. And it is very important to mention those who dared to try the game when it was just a cardboard and pencil prototype. Friends and family from Canada, Turkey, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Colombia and Chile, in person or from a distance, supported the process with their recommendations and laughter. Finally, the enormous patience of the publisher in Bogotá (Colombia), to receive this particular printing format and bring it to the excellent product that you now have in your hands.

And the mission does not end here. The game is licensed under a Creative Commons license that allows anyone to use it for inspiration, as long as they maintain the same type of license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). But the main intention is that the game can be replicated all over the planet, in all possible languages. For this, the free PDF files have been placed for download and printing. If someone wants to translate them, they simply have to write to the creators and we will share the instructions to translate it into their language. Like the sea turtles, Bobalito wants to take his message of solidarity and conservation to the entire planet.
Last but not least, a campaign has been created to recover some of the costs of making and printing the game, as well as to continue its dissemination. Below you will find the link button so you can support us with a donation.
Good rowing!
