Ikea has promised to increase security measures in its stores after a video appearing to show a woman masturbating at a Chinese location of the Dutch and Swedish furniture giant went viral on social media.
The pornographic and explicit video, which has since been scrubbed from Chinese social media, reportedly showed a woman masturbating on different pieces of furniture in a store while other shoppers passed by. Screenshots of the video continued to circulate on social media on Tuesday.
"We resolutely oppose and condemn this kind of behavior, and immediately reported it to the police in the city of the suspected store," Ikea said in a statement posted to the Chinese social-media platform Weibo, according to AFP . The store added that it would enforce "even more careful security and public cleanliness measures" and asked customers to "browse stores in an orderly and civilized way."
Ikea didn't specify in which branch of the furniture store the event took place, but social-media users have speculated that it happened in the city of Guangzhou, Vice reported . The woman in the video has not been identified.
Posts on Weibo indicated that the video might have been taken before the coronavirus outbreak , as nobody in the clip appeared to be wearing masks . Most Ikea stores are closed worldwide because of the pandemic.
After news of the incident spread online, people were quick to joke about it. "I guess there's no reason to go to IKEA anymore," Mario Lopez tweeted, along with a picture of TMZ's coverage.
"DON'T FINGER YOURSELF AND OR JERK OFF IN IKEA'S BATHROOMS," Barstool Sports said on Twitter.
A representative for Ikea did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.

A SUBSTITUTE teacher has been accused of filming herself masturbating in front of a class of second-graders, cops say.
Amelia Ressler, 30, was arrested on Friday and charged with 19 counts of child molestation, which allegedly took place at Mt Zion Elementary School, according to local police.
The school is near Carrollton, a city about 54 miles west of Atlanta, in Georgia .
School officials notified investigators of “allegations of misconduct” by the teacher.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office 's subsequent investigation found that Ressler had “engaged in indecent and immoral acts while in the presence of school aged children."
“It appears she was masturbating while the classroom was full of kids,” Ashley Hulsey, with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, told WAGA .
The 19 counts represent one of each child in her second grade classroom, cops said.
According to Husley, investigators found evidence of the indecent act when someone in the community saw a video and alerted the school.
“We obtained video evidence because she videoed it herself and disseminated it and we were able to get a hold of that evidence,” she said.
Hulsey also said that investigators were in the process of conducting interviews with students who were present in the classroom during the alleged incident.
Additional charges could be added based on those interviews, according to Hulsey.
“It’s one of these things the kids are going through that they shouldn’t,” she said.
“The mental anguish that it’s causing these children and parents, that was our drive behind working this case, getting it down quickly, getting her put in jail as quickly as possible.”
Ressler is currently being held in the county jail. Bond has not been set, jail records show.

Disturbing new video shows the moment an Australian police department employee corners a 13-year-old girl in an elevator and gropes her as she frantically attempts to get away.
Glenn Roche, 54, who was found guilty of indecent assault this week, is seen in the footage chasing the youngster into the elevator after a day out with her family, the New Zealand Herald reported on Thursday.
Roche seems to be playfully chasing the girl but then the sicko grabs her, fondles her and tries to kiss her while she tries to wrestle free, the footage posted by TVNZ-TV shows.
The girl later told authorities that she still suffers nightmares from the harrowing July 2019 assault, according to the Herald.
But Roche told the judge he was just playing around and claimed there was “no sexual gratification on my behalf.”
“My hands have slid up her body as she slid to the ground,” the sicko told police. “My mind has gone off on a tangent like this is a challenge to me. I can get her and give her a kiss on the cheek like her two sisters and mum.”
“She contributed to that occurring by releasing her body weight and sliding through my hands,” he said, blaming his tiny victim.
Police said Roche had been out with the girl’s mom and siblings. It is unclear what his relationship to the girl and her family was.
The judge wasn’t buying his excuse, however, and found Roche guilty.
He was also suspended from the police department, where he worked as a civilian employee, according to the reports.
